Quinta de Roriz Red Blend Douro Reserva 2001

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Full-bodied, deep-colored and rich with lip-smacking flavors of dark plum, blackberry jam, cocoa and a hint of French roast as well. Tannins build on the finish, but with an appealing silkiness and dark chocolate notes that go on and on. Drink now through 2008.

In the very earliest years of the 18th century, more than 150 years before the Port companies of Oporto began to build vineyards in the Upper Douro, a Scotsman named Robert Archibald travelled into the Douro. He acquired a perpetual lease on a wild and isolated property between Pinhao and Tua. Here he built a rudimentary shooting box from which he hunted wild boar and partridge in the surrounding countryside. Shortly after he began to plant a vineyard on his land and Quinta de Roriz started to produce wine. During the 20th century the Roriz wines continued to appear, but now associated to shippers' names. It is now, at the start of a new millennium, that Roriz has been re-established as an independent producer and it is intended to regain its position as one of the pre-eminent Quintas of the Douro. A powerful, oak-aged wine with fine, ripe red fruits and black tannins. This Reserva wine has 12 months French oak aging which gives it complexity, but the richness of the fruit gives a great firm balance to the wood. It is still young; age for at least 5 years.

Rich and deeply flavored, with brooding dark plum, dark chocolate and heady spicy flavors. Plenty of tannins, with good grip on the powerfully smoky and decadent finish. Needs time in the cellar. Best from 2003 through 2006.
