Quartz Reef Pinot Noir Central Otago 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

It is now well established that Central Otago is producing outstanding pinot noirs, with Quartz Reef being no exception. Situated in the heart of the Central Otago wine region, Quartz Reef produces and specialises in premium sparkling wine, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir wines. Quartz Reef blends the proven winemaking talents of Austrian-born Rudi Bauer, whose pinot noirs have won a host of gold medals in New Zealand and Australia, and Clotilde Chauvet, whose family own the Champagne house of Marc Chauvet in France. Still, there is no doubt in Rudi's mind that to produce great pinot noir will take time. We are looking forward to the exciting journey to learn more about pinot noir, the expression of the vines and the development in the bottle. This Pinot Noir has a complex perfumed nose of dark berries with a pure, compact and densely flavoured palate of ripe forest fruit, herbal notes and earthy spice, followed by textural fine tannins. It pairs ideally with roast duck and lamb cutlets.

Named after New Zealand’s largest quartz deposit that lies beneath our vineyards at Bendigo Station, Quartz Reef has become the vessel for what winemaker Rudi Bauer calls - his search to make wines which exhibit “a symphony of flavours” that “capture attention and entertain so that you forget everything else”. Quartz reef was founded in 1996 and the principal partners are Rudi Bauer, Trevor Scott, John Perriam. Quartz Reef vinifies wines of outstanding flavour and intensity. There are currently 30 hectares under cultivation. The key to this distinction lies in the maturing sun drenched slopes situated at Quartz Reef’s Bendigo Estate vineyard. Under Rudi’s custodianship Pinot Noir becomes the essence of Central Otago whilst Pinot Gris takes on a rich textured dry style. All Quartz Reef wines benefit greatly from Rudi Bauer’s Austrian heritage exploring the many dimensions of the varieties. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
