User Reviews for Quady Starboard Vintage Port

Winemaker's Notes:

'Starboard' is the name Quady gives to its port wine. Quady use the same grape varieties and similar methods as they do in the Douro, but the Californian climate is warmer and the soils different. Instead of 140 proof fortifying brandy, Quady use a neutral grape spirit, 190 proof, for fortifying. Starboard matures earlier and has a riper more voluptuous flavor. The grapes in Batch 88 are primarily Tinta Roriz from the Madera area. The vineyard is managed to give loose bunches and a small crop. The Starboard Vintage 1996 consisted of about 97% Tinta Cao from Amador County and 3% Touriga Nacional from Madera County. This very dark wine is developing an attractive perfume, but the flavors are not yet integrated with the wine's tannic structure. There is good promise for aging, perhaps 20 years.
