Purgatory Cellars Persimmon Solera NV

Member Review by Chelsey E:

This is my first persimmon wine, so I really have nothing with which to compare it. It has a very distinct (and lovely) maple-like scent, and a very sweet taste, with some hints of spice and warmth. It's color and flavor recall autumn. It makes a pretty good dessert wine by itself, and I imagine it might also be interesting addition to a dessert like tiramisu!

It’s amazing where your hobby can take you. Take White Owl Winery, for example. The idea of White Owl actually began from a home winemaking kit. It was in the early nineties when Brian Neighbors gave his father, Ken a boxed wine kit as a gift. After making kit wine for a few months, they decided to try their hand at fruit wine. One thing led to another and by 1999 the father and son team had received over 50 international awards as private wine-makers. From 2001 to 2007, White Owl Winery has received over 150 national and international awards for their outstanding wines. They also have five wines with the coveted wine rating numbers: PERSIMMON SOLERA with 90 points, PAW PAW with 87 points, SPICED PEAR with 86 POINTS, OLD BLUE PORT with 85 points and CHERRY PIE with 82 points. All were rated in 2007 by the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago. So far, for 2008, W.O.W. has won another 30 awards. White Owl’s forte’ are fruit wines such as Cherry Pie, Spiced Pear, Elderberry, Paw Paw and Persimmon. Their Paw Paw wine is the only one produced in the world! They also produce traditional grape wines like Merlot, Chardonnay, Vidal, Traminette and Seyval. Blends such as Snowy White, Chard-n-Apricot, Purgatory Red and Raul’s Ripple have been great sellers. And, of course, the ever popular “Sparkling” wines, including Holiday Sparkle, Strawberry Sparkle, Grapefruit Sparkle and Spec’s Spumante’. Don’t miss their one-of-a-kind Dessert wines; Old Blue Port and Persimmon Solera (formerly Grand Persimmon Sherry), winner of the 2007 Illinois Governor’s Cup for Best Dessert Wine in the state. White Owl Winery is also known for their Special Events. W.O.W. Murder Mystery Dinners and W.O.W. Comedy Improv Dinners are performed by V.A.M.P Shows and held throughout the year on Friday and Saturday evenings. Reservations are required for these one-of-a-kind shows. Private Murder Mystery shows and Holiday parties may be scheduled at the winery. A menu for every budget is available and wine sampling and winery tours are included. If you love Celtic Music, White Owl Winery is the place to go! This will be the seventh season of Second Sunday Celtic Music at W.O.W. The music begins at 2 and continues until 5 p.m. (all Central Times,) the second Sunday of each month. Enjoy Live Irish music in a gorgeous country setting or in their newly remodeled Tasting Room. This event is free! White Owl wines are now available throughout Indiana and Illinois, with distribution to be set up in Ohio and Missouri this year. With all of the successes of White Owl Winery’s first seven years, it’s easy to see why White Owl Winery is the home of “Quality Wines, Great Times!” Read less
