Prunotto Barbaresco Bric Turot 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2010 Barbaresco Bric Turot opens with a slightly darker color (but not by much) and similarly delicate tones of rose petal and dried spice. There’s a more pronounced mineral element of river stone or lead pencil that gives this wine beautiful definition. Crisp acidity and integrated tannins do a great job of making the wine feel important in the mouth. The is one of the nicest Barbarescos ever produced by this estate...95" WA 06/13 "Prunotto's 2010 Barbaresco Bric Turot is a big step up from the straight bottling. Sweet red cherry, plum, anise, cloves, menthol and new leather notes flesh out in the glass. The Bric Turot is layered and expressive, with gorgeous depth and plenty of resonance. The 2010 drinks well today, but should also age effortlessly for at least another decade, and likely beyond. Here the tannins are a bit livelier than the 2009...93" AG 10/13

In Barbaresco, a part of the vineyard was replanted three years ago, the last vintage with only older vine juice, Big on the nose, deep and rich with dried fruit, leather and spice notes underpinned with hints of autumnal herbs, candied cherries, astringent spices and dry soil notes. Round and opulent in the mouth, this shows a nice blend of freshness of flavor and bright acids with tannins that are both ripe and just beginning to soften. Fairly tense and clear on the palate this still feels firm in the mouth with mossy cherry fruit on the palate leading to a backend which gains some leathery and dry spice tones before finishing with fairly important tannins and fine length, all amarena cherry and strawberry toned. Pretty classic stuff with fine persistence and power. 92pts

In 1989 when Antinori group purchased the Prunotto winery they made smart investments, acquiring plots in prominent vineyards in the most exclusive areas including the Bussia vineyard in Barolo and the Bric Turot vineyard in Barbaresco. The result is a continuation of the the quality improvements started long ago by Prunotto and evidenced by this excellent Barbaresco from Bric Turot. The Bric Turot vienyard has soils from the Tortonian-Messinian period rich in manganese, zinc, and borium that are fine-grained particles that allow roots to go deep and draw in the complex array of minerals. 2008 was a superb vintage with beautifully balanced fruit. Selected Nebbiolo grape bunches were destemmed and pressed. Fermentation on the skins lasted approximately fifteen days at controlled temperature and the malolactic fermentation finished before the beginning of winter. The wine was aged in both large 50 hectoliter oak casks and in small 60 gallon oak barrels (used once previously) for twelve months. An additional twelve months of bottle aging let the wine soften and become more expressive. Upon release the Wine Spectator scored it 90 points and the Wine Advocate scored it 92 saying "Firm yet well-integrated tannins provide the backbone as the 2008 Barbaresco Bric Turot opens up in the glass. I find lovely inner sweetness and perfume in the dark fruit, although the 2008 is several years away, at a minimum, from providing true pleasure. Hints of spices and flowers wrap around the vibrant, juicy finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020." Now with a few additional years in the bottle the wine is starting to show its true colors. Don't miss it! On Sale!
