Provenance Vineyards Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This really is expressive with ripe cassis fruit framed with sweet, toasted oak notes and a lovely herbal top note. On the palate this shows lovely concentration and ripeness but retains that herbal, almost oregano edge and a freshness and balance that adds length to the finish. the finish is still a bit oaky with mocha and spice notes but ample red berry fruit keeps everything in balance. A great value and a wine with 5-10 years of cellaring potential. 89pts

Our inaugural release, Provenance Vineyards 1999 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, established the winery's style: an elegant yet powerful richness with deep, intense flavors that reflect the vintage and vineyard. With the 2000 vintage we expanded our family of wines to include Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon and Napa Valley Merlot. Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc, our only white wine, made its debut with the 2003 vintage. In August 2002 we acquired the winery known formerly as Chateau Beaucanon, located on Highway 29, for our home in the heart of the Rutherford appellation. After extensive remodeling and refurbishing of the property, we opened our tasting room, featuring a floor made of staves from our own oak barrels, in October 2003. Read less

Fairly light nose of some cassis fruit. Predictably, there is cassis on the tip of the tongue—not too abrupt, though. As the wine passes back, there is some powdered cocoa and some earthiness. (Is that Rutherford dust?) Fairly sedate tannin and mild acid make this a very easy-drinking Cabernet Sauvignon. Not the biggest, most full-bodied cab I’ve ever had, but, really, an enjoyable wine.

Another good value from 2011, this wine offers black cherry, moist cereal grain, dark spice and brown sugar on the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied with both prominent acidity and firm tannins of fine grain and chalk. A couple of years in the cellar will soften the tannins and release additional depth. 90pts

Deep dark color. Woody nose. On the palate: initial sensation is "sweet" oak, various fruits surround the tongue--cherry, prune, even some mint--tannins then add their puckery dry sensation. The wine is a delight on the back of the palate. In spite of all the wood in the front of the palate, it is remarkably smooth on the finish. A very good wine that I hope improves with age. I have more in the cellar. US$29.99 at Costco. I may go back and buy more.

Provenance is one of the best values in Napa. While I favor the Merlot to the Cab, both are well worth the price. Silky-smooth mouth feel I look for in Napa wines, with the body being on the full side. Last time in Napa we followed Chimney Rock and Regusci, both from the Stag's Leap District, with Provenance, and there was no contest, Provenance was the better wine (even though I am a huge James Cole fan).

Herbal, viney nose but with some hints of berry fruit. Initial hit of currants on the tip of the tongue. Then, there are hits from tannin and acid. A perfectly functional wine, but it does not seem to have much depth and complexity. Additional air seemed to calm down the tannin, but that only seemed to add to the berry fruit.

"The steadily cool 2011 growing season resulted in long hangtime for the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes as they lingered on the vines into late October and early November before reaching maturity,” says Winemaker Chris Cooney. “The slow ripening preserved complexity, while the cumulative sun exposure developed rich, ripe flavors in the small crop. I call our 2011 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon classically Bordeaux-style in character, with elegant boysenberry, cassis and plum expression layered with hints of sage, minerals and black olive.” Texturally opulent Rutherford Dust tannins and vibrant acidity structure the red-fruit flavors, while new French oak barrels add integrated toffee, espresso and clove nuances. - Winery Varietal Composition: 93% Cabernet Sauvigonon 3% Cabernet Franc 3% Malbec 1% Petit Verdot Barrel Aging: 19 months French, Hungarian and American oak, 30% new barrels of predominantly French oak Alcohol: 14.2% Acidity: 6.2 g/L pH: 3.74 ** Only 10 in Stock **

"The p-wave is the primary wave in an earthquake. We named this wine PWAVE because it shakes up the traditional blend of Bordeaux-heritage grape varietals," says Winemaker Chris Cooney. "We've added non-traditional varietals to a solid core of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, bringing lively, bright red-plum and raspberry to the rich, black cherry and blackberry profile. A nice dose of new oak barrels adds spice, while the cool 2011 vintage gives complex herbal nuances. The tannin structure is firm, yet extremely supple, giving the wine notable elegance." - WineryVarietal Composition:42% Merlot33% Cabernet Sauvignon9% Syrah9% Petite Sirah3% Tempranillo2% Touriga2% Cabernet FrancBarrel Aging: 16 months, 35% new oak barrelsAlcohol: 13.9%Acidity: 6.0 g/LpH: 3.64

The synergy of great terroir and a stellar vintage gave our 2010 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon its exceptionally pure, focused flavors. The rich, deep blackberry, cassis and juicy plum aromas reveal fragrant nuances of violet and toasted almond. Echoing the aromas, the ripe flavors expand across the palate, supported by the texturally opulent Rutherford Dust tannins. Integrated toffee, espresso and clove from new French oak barrels linger gently in the dark-fruit finish. While this wine's dynamic tannin structure promises excellent aging potential, it is approachable and food friendly even in its youth. - WineryVarietal Composition:92% Cabernet Sauvignon3% Petite Sirah2% Malbec1% Petit Verdot1% Merlot1% Cabernet FrancBarrel Aging: 21 months, 100% barrel aged, 40% new barrels of predominantly French oak.
