Protea Red Blend 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

"In a world of cookie-cutter products, Protea is on a mission to make wines that dare to be exotic and beautiful, in every way imaginable. They've broken new ground by offering their uniquely delicious wines in designer-crafted bottles you won't forget, and won’t want to discard. Protea Red combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz and strives for complexity and intensity while never, ever succumbing to the pitfalls of the Big Indistict Red. Color is Deep Ruby. Aromas of blackberry, espresso and spice. On the palate, this red blend strives for great fruit, balance and juiciness with a plush texture and subtle grippy tannins." -Importer

MAN Vintners:
This MAN thing began with three friends and an idea: to make a wine that we ourselves would love to buy. Good quality, excellent value, and cool packaging. Not exactly an epiphany, but enough to motivate us to action. What do we call it? Keeping peace in the family, we took the initials of our wives. (We each have one, that is.) Not exactly an epiphany, but enough to motivate us to action. What do we call it? Keeping peace in the family, we took the initials of our wives. (We each have one, that is.) So that is how we explained to Marie, Anette, and Nicky that we were going to be "busy" most weekends. It's for you! we told them. Could've slapped on something cute and furry but the world doesn't need another critter label. We are trying to do something different. It's the WINES we're excited about! Bold and gutsy, reflecting our extreme terroir. Grape growing in the Perdeberg Hills is not for wimps. There is little rainfall, so you have to be in tune with your vineyards. Too much crop or too much stress and you end up with grapes that can't ripen, or worse. But this is grape growing heaven for generations of our farmers. There are no fat, lazy bloated grapes here. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Shiraz The label, all very well designed one would think, directs you to find blackberry, espresso and spice in this wine. I certainly find the spice on the nose, but more weedy herbal character and black currant fruit than blackberry or espresso. It’s a gentle nose, Cabernet driven though creamy and slightly peppery with late arriving hints of bacon and toasted oak. Open and lush in the mouth, the acidity sort of sticks out here, not lending support just sitting in the corner by itself. Odd. The tannins are soft and towards the back of the palate which does deliver lots of black berry and black currant fruit and now one might even find espresso. Slightly medicinal in the Smith Bros cough drop kind of way, with a short, extremely clean finish and some lingering milk chocolaty tannins on the finale. Nothing out of place. 85pts
