Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello 2009
"...one of the more detailed, vibrant wines in this range. Sweet dark red cherries, mint, pine, graphite and crushed flowers all take shape in the glass. The typical high-toned Ovello bouquet, slightly firm tannins and energy are all there, making this one of the more site-specific of the 2009 Riservas. In 2009, the Ovello is a bit more accessible than it usually is, even if I don't quite find the visceral thrill of the very best years...93" AG 10/13
RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
Editorial Reviews for Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello
Sweet raspberry fruit greets the nose along with an strong leathery edge, dried herb notes and a touch of chamomile with high toned dried balsamic top notes. Firmly focused in the mouth with nice early acids adding a bit of cut and quite good clarity in the mouth. There is lovely definition to the cranberry/lingonberry toned tart cherry fruit that has a nice balsamic edge all supported by finely ripe tannins. With a bit of licorice on the finish this turns chewy with tannins that close things down a bit though this does end with an elegant, floral inner mouth perfume. 92pts
After a tight floral note opening note on the nose this turns very precise, deep and savory with a fairly strong wood smoke top notes, briar, pipe tobacco, and strawberry aromas. In the mouth this exhibits a lovely, smooth polished feel, nuanced but smooth, with fine tannins and integrated acidity supporting really precise and crisp woodsy red berry fruits. This has excellent purity this year, and good length with a balance of tannin and acid that puts this near the top of the class. 92pts
Lovely purity of fragrance that is sweet and slightly candied with detailed cranberry and strawberry with hints of soil, graham cracker, and dried green herb adding detail. With big fruit on entry, this has a bit of a soft, broad and mouth filling feel to it, delivering super fresh fruit framed by nice mineral and dried herb tones in the mouth, though with less aromatic intensity than the 09. There’s nice tension on the backend and this finishes a touch short but with good freshness. 91pts
This was wonderfully musky and gamy on the nose with a somewhat closed, dusty, earthy aspect to its rather masculine perfumes of asphalt, orange blossom and mortadella. Bright acids on entry with a lightly chewy mid-palate that offers up great, just ripe fruit supported by fine, stiff tannins. Austere and slightly rustic yet with lovely purity to the bitter cherry fruit that leads to a lovely tar and licorice tinged finish of moderate length. Quintessential 1996 and quintessential Ovello. Really textbook stuff but not in a particularly popular model. Just coming out of it’s shell this should be particularly long lived though I would recommend drinking 2011- 2025 92pts
Fresh on the nose and intense with aromas of herbs, warm stones and woodland spice over a base of strawberry fruit with fine rose petal top notes. Crisp, elegant and polished in the mouth with a gorgeous core of rhubarb and raspberry fruit framed with mineral accents. the acids are sharp here and the fine grained tannins firm yet well covered by the fruit. Finishing with good length and a savory note. 92pts
A decidedly leathery tone initially but then this really began to unfold aromatically yielding a fleshy, slightly dried cherry/sour cherry core of fruit with complicating notes of forest floor, bat leaf, menthol and cigar ash. In the mouth the attack features big acids and big though superbly ripe tannins. The structural elements are balanced and really well integrated into the tight core of dark wild berry fruits. There is a succulence on the long finish that draws one back to the glass for another sip. This would have benefitted from a better glass and more time to breath but is really lovely right now and still has significant potential for positive development. 2009-2023 91pts
Fleshy and gamey on the nose with background notes of old wood, earth and mineral. Just a few haunting berry tones recall the fruit. Decidedly better in the mouth with a velvety feel and bright red cherry and orange rind tone. This is round and mouth filling with crisp, moderate tannins and zesty acidity that leads to a zesty finish with fine herbal accents. Really lovely transparency and purity here. 2009-2014 90pts

The 1990 Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello Riserva had an all-star performance this night, and a number of tasters listed it as their wine of the night. This wine came across as all grace and elegance wrapped in a package of soft, sweet fruit. The nose showed aromas of black cherry, red floral notes, hints of molasses and tobacco. The palate showcased the refined structure of a Nebbiolo just coming to maturity, as soft red fruit washed across the tongue followed by clove and bitters. This was all kept in check by a balanced acidity, which left the mouth watering for more.

Good bright, dark red. Sexy aromas of red cherry, raspberry, flowers and blood orange; showcases its cooler, high-elevation site. Not an opulent style but juicy, precise and penetrating, with very good lift to the intense red fruit and spice flavors. Fine-grained, suave, very youthful Barbaresco. - Stephen Tanzer 91 Points

Good full red. Currant, smoke, menthol and a touch of oak on the nose. Smooth and sweet but at the same time vinous and youthful, with the currant and smoke flavors carrying through onto the palate. This suave, deep wine finishes with substantial,... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Ovello Riserva 750ml
An austere, sinewy style, exhibiting strawberry, tea, white pepper, eucalyptus and iron flavors. Its all underscored by dense, dusty tannins, with plenty of grip on the tightly wound finish. Best from 2015 through 2027. 1,166 cases made. -BS Wine Spectator. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Ovello Riserva 750ml
Sattes Kirschrot. Typischer Nebbiolo-Duft nach Weichselkirschen, Dörrobst, Nüssen und Holzgeschmack. Klassisch im Gaumen, kräftige Tannine und würzigen Holzaromen. Elegant und anhaltend im Abgang.
This is a full bodied, intense, complex Nebbiolo from one of the many “cru” vineyards owned by Produttori del Barbaresco. It shows bold red-fruits and strong tannins. Save for years or decant now.
The 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is deep, dense and incredibly primary. Although the wine clearly possesses remarkable stuffing, there is very little tertiary development here. With air, suggestions of menthol, pine, spices and licorice gradually emerge, but this remains a wine in need of serious bottle age. Lingering notes of sweetness resonate on the long finish. This austere, but beautiful Barbaresco is destined to develop beautifully in bottle and should offer glorious drinking down the road. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. This has nice freshly sliced plum and peach character. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins, a long finish and an impressive backbone of tannins. Best after 2011. 1,000 cases made. -JS Good full red. Very ripe aromas of cherry liqueur, raspberry and menthol. Surprisingly sweet in the mouth, but less sharply delineated than the Moccagatta or Rabaja in spite of possessing firm acidity. Solid and rich but in a slightly more rustic style, finishing with...
