Produttori del Barbaresco Nebbiolo Langhe 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Below 15 years old, 20-23 days on skins, 6 months in wood Very balsamic on the nose with a huge pine resin top note, some sweet woody notes, sweet red fruit and a hint of mint. Rather sweet/tart in the mouth, though mostly tart with lots of cranberry and raspberry flavors. This is less balsamic in the mouth than on the nose, but it retains some of the woodland spice character through the modest finish, which lacks some fruit covering the dry finishing tannins. 85pts

Founded in 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. From its humble beginnings making the first three vintages in the church basement, Produttori del Barbaresco has grown to a 52 member co-operative with 250 acres of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation and an annual production of over 500,000 bottles. Its vineyards amount to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each member is in full control of their land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with the skill and dedication they have honed over generations. Playing a key role in elevating the quality level of Barbaresco over the years, Produttori del Barbaresco produces a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe, a Barbaresco blend and nine single vineyard wines produces in premier vineyards: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo. Very aromatic with a really compelling nose filled wild berries, balsamic spices, some cinnamon and a bit of minty fresh herbs. This is intense and ripe in the mouth with impressive complexity and freshness. It has a lovely, lightly chewy feel due to the significant ripe tannins and fine acidity. In the mouth this is remarkably aromatic, and quite Barbaresco like with its masses of ripe fresh balsamic fruit, nice cranberry and strawberry notes topped with herbal, bay leaf and rose petal top notes. A big Langhe Nebbiolo with alcohol of 14.5% this is powerful and full, though today it does seem just a bit light on the finish. 91pts

Nice fruit as well as mineral, floral, spice and herbal notes. Still young, tannins should soften with time.

So, here we are, with this affordable Nebbiolo. Clear, translucent ruby colour in the glass that reminded me of Pinot Noir or Beaujolais. This wine was softer and juicier than I expected. Notes of cherry with some raspberry and plum were dominant, although there were still slight leathery notes. More of the same on the palate, with some spice and mint or menthol. Well integrated acidity isn't really as bracing as you see with other Italian wine. Short-moderate length that leaves you with a drying feeling from the tannin. Although it might be a touch lean, this wine still felt fresh, young, approachable and ready to drink now. *FYI - I read that Langhe is a big area that encompasses both Barolo and Barbaresco, so it's easier for grapes to make the cut. That probably explains our lower price point.

Good medium red. Strawberry liqueur on the nose, lifted by spices. Sweet on entry, then a bit strict in the middle palate, with fresh acidity framing the red fruit, tobacco and white pepper flavors. A juicy, fresh, food-friendly nebbiolo with a firm tannic spine.

Made from declassified Barbaresco lots at this legendary cooperative winery, this outperforms many more ambitious wines - without trying to be anything that it's not. That said, the wine is brisk and clean. The tannins have a hint of pomegrante-seed bitterness, but don't interfere with the length of the tart cherry flavor. It's the sort of wine Italians would eat with song birds caught from the wild, when there were still song birds to catch. Now they might decant it for farm-raised roast squab.

Pepper and spice on the nose with hints of anise and herbs. Lively tannins and a long finish makes this wine a nice introduction for those who are curious about the great Barolos and Barbarescos of Piedmont.

Medium red. Sexy aromas of redcurrant, game, truffle and tobacco. A juicy, aromatic midweight, with a slightly medicinal licorice quality and bright acidity lifting the flavors of red fruits, smoke and game. Finishes with substantial, slightly drying tannins. This was bottled barely a week before my visit.

Blended from a selection of this renowned co-op's vineyards in Barbaresco, this shows remarkable balance and composure. Initially floral, with deep scents of rose and plum, it gains elegance and complexity with air, mixing red fruit with savory notes of smoked tea and spice. The structure feels as influenced by acidity as it is by tannin: The flavors are lifted and brisk, the ripeness of the vintage checked by the wine's brightness. An impressive effort, this is worth cellaring a few years if you can resist its charm. Otherwise, decant a bottle for fresh pasta with pork sugo.

A tannic, lean young red, this wine's umami savor is built on mulling spices and salty mushroom scents. Decant it for a gamey stew.

A pretty ruby red with pure clarity and purple reflections. Aromatics and flavors are persistent and complex with hints of violets, wild strawberries, raspberries, cherries and a warm spicy finish.
