Produttori del Barbaresco Nebbiolo Langhe 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

86 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): The 2010 Langhe Nebbiolo is a pretty, mid-weight wine laced with sweet red berries, flowers, mint and spices. It shows only modest depth, with slightly unpolished tannins and a somewhat rough-around-the-edges personality. This is the only Produttori wine I have been less than enthused with over the last few years, but in a way that is only natural, as the other wines have improved markedly, and the Langhe Nebbiolo is the outlet for any juice that isn't used for the higher-end wines. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. (Oct 2012)

Founded in 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. From its humble beginnings making the first three vintages in the church basement, Produttori del Barbaresco has grown to a 52 member co-operative with 250 acres of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation and an annual production of over 500,000 bottles. Its vineyards amount to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each member is in full control of their land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with the skill and dedication they have honed over generations. Playing a key role in elevating the quality level of Barbaresco over the years, Produttori del Barbaresco produces a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe, a Barbaresco blend and nine single vineyard wines produces in premier vineyards: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo. So, here we are, with this affordable Nebbiolo. Clear, translucent ruby colour in the glass that reminded me of Pinot Noir or Beaujolais. This wine was softer and juicier than I expected. Notes of cherry with some raspberry and plum were dominant, although there were still slight leathery notes. More of the same on the palate, with some spice and mint or menthol. Well integrated acidity isn't really as bracing as you see with other Italian wine. Short-moderate length that leaves you with a drying feeling from the tannin. Although it might be a touch lean, this wine still felt fresh, young, approachable and ready to drink now. *FYI - I read that Langhe is a big area that encompasses both Barolo and Barbaresco, so it's easier for grapes to make the cut. That probably explains our lower price point.

Medium red. Light aromas of cherry, mint and flowers. Bright, clean and juicy but on the lean side, with a medicinal aspect and slightly drying tannins.
