What to Expect

Barbaresco is a wine that shares much with its close neighbor Barolo. Both are made with the Nebbiolo grape and from nearly contiguous plots of vines in Piedmont. The slightly warmer climate of Barbaresco, and resulting earlier harvest, makes these wines a touch lighter and less complex than Barolo, if more elegant and earlier maturing. They share much the same flavor profile with their siblings though tend to be less intense.

Sweet and deep on the nose, with spicy tones, lots of prosciutto and preserved meats with a slightly gamey edge. There are background notes of dried funghi, talc and tobacco lurking behind the red fruits and a floral top note. Big sweet fruit on entry with a round, lush character. This is big yet with excellent balance full of sweet wild berry fruit. Enjoyed this for the first time at the recommendation of some new friends. A great selection. It paired nicely with our fantastic cheese selection and Braised Lamb Shanks main course.

Medium bodied, with nice spice notes of white pepper, anise and violet. Perfect with sausages, ham and salami, pizzas and pasta with simple sauces, spicy food.Readers who want to get an early idea of the 2006 vintage in Piedmont will want to check out Produttori del Barbaresco's terrific 2006 Nebbiolo delle Langhe. The wine shows the super-ripe qualities of the vintage in its sweet dark fruit, licorice, tar and spices. Fairly pale color. Deep lilac fruitiness on the nose. Pleasant tar notes with some solid tannins. Finish of sour cherries. I paired it with twice cooked pork (chinese food) and chicken sausages - went well!

Note: had been open, but recorked for 24 hours.
