Made from declassified Barbaresco lots at this legendary cooperative winery, this outperforms many more ambitious wines - without trying to be anything that it's not. That said, the wine is brisk and clean. The tannins have a hint of pomegrante-seed bitterness, but don't interfere with the length of the tart cherry flavor. It's the sort of wine Italians would eat with song birds caught from the wild, when there were still song birds to catch. Now they might decant it for farm-raised roast squab.
Blended from a selection of this renowned co-op's vineyards in Barbaresco, this shows remarkable balance and composure. Initially floral, with deep scents of rose and plum, it gains elegance and complexity with air, mixing red fruit with savory notes of smoked tea and spice. The structure feels as influenced by acidity as it is by tannin: The flavors are lifted and brisk, the ripeness of the vintage checked by the wine's brightness. An impressive effort, this is worth cellaring a few years if you can resist its charm. Otherwise, decant a bottle for fresh pasta with pork sugo.

Good medium red. Strawberry liqueur on the nose, lifted by spices. Sweet on entry, then a bit strict in the middle palate, with fresh acidity framing the red fruit, tobacco and white pepper flavors. A juicy, fresh, food-friendly nebbiolo with a firm tannic spine.
A pretty ruby red with pure clarity and purple reflections. Aromatics and flavors are persistent and complex with hints of violets, wild strawberries, raspberries, cherries and a warm spicy finish.
A tannic, lean young red, this wine's umami savor is built on mulling spices and salty mushroom scents. Decant it for a gamey stew.
Medium red. Sexy aromas of redcurrant, game, truffle and tobacco. A juicy, aromatic midweight, with a slightly medicinal licorice quality and bright acidity lifting the flavors of red fruits, smoke and game. Finishes with substantial, slightly drying tannins. This was bottled barely a week before my visit.
