Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Torre 2003

Member Review by RPerro:

Quite impressive, although still a touch young to be fully enjoyable without serious decanter time (this was a pop-n-pour). Still, great cherry fruit, with a strawberry component, and although tannic, not overly so. My wine of the night.

Founded in 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. From its humble beginnings making the first three vintages in the church basement, Produttori del Barbaresco has grown to a 52 member co-operative with 250 acres of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation and an annual production of over 500,000 bottles. Its vineyards amount to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each member is in full control of their land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with the skill and dedication they have honed over generations. Playing a key role in elevating the quality level of Barbaresco over the years, Produttori del Barbaresco produces a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe, a Barbaresco blend and nine single vineyard wines produces in premier vineyards: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo. Pretty big wine perfect with heavy meats. Ripe fruit nose and finish, thick but smooth body with some other flavors, maybe some spices... fun wine. Maybe a bit over-priced.

The color is a bit translucent - leaning towards a ruby red. The nose is a combination of apricot, liquorice, cranberry, plums, and earth. More of an old school - old world wine. The taste is very hot, spicy, pepperish - little fruit and super dry, almost too aggressive. The finish is interupted by an abrupt acidic event that is off putting more than it is complex. The wine is far more enjoyable with an Italian pasta dish, including ripe tomato sauces. Let this wine breathe and be prepared for heat and spice if you let the wine fall off the center of your palate.

This comes from a "Cantine Sociale", also known as a cooperative of growers known as Produttori del Barbaresco. This is in fact the most important wine of their lineup since it comprises the bulk of their production. Youthful upon opening with dark berries and chalk-driven tannins.
