Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pora 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Small raspberry fruit, sandalwood, and lots of rose petals with a slightly dusty edge show up on the nose which carries with a sense of sweetness to the fruit. Bright on the palate, and very lively in the mouth with raspberry and cranberry fruit, along with hints of wild cherry. This is really lovely with a playful balance, though it finishes a touch short with hard tannin on the cherry cough drop finish. Should be fairly elegant if the tannins soften up. 89pts

Founded in 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. From its humble beginnings making the first three vintages in the church basement, Produttori del Barbaresco has grown to a 52 member co-operative with 250 acres of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation and an annual production of over 500,000 bottles. Its vineyards amount to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each member is in full control of their land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with the skill and dedication they have honed over generations. Playing a key role in elevating the quality level of Barbaresco over the years, Produttori del Barbaresco produces a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe, a Barbaresco blend and nine single vineyard wines produces in premier vineyards: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo. deep, liquory, touch of salame wood, more fruit, more wild fruit, poppy seeds and even a touch walnutty, very fresh, nice tannins here, nice acids, dark fruit, masculine fruit feminine structure, refreshing MP, fantastic finish full of wild berry red currant/wild cherry fruit, tannins really clamp down but the fruit still manages to seep through to the savory, woodsy, almost truffled final.

In contrast to the closed and wild Ovello this was offering up a fruity nose with hints of almost jammy cherry and red plum fruits, big rose notes and gentle tones of forest floor, leather and candle wax adding complexity. Soft and rich in the mouth this is ripe and round with a dark, slightly tarry quality to the ripe fruits. A touch austere with moderate tannins and a crisp finish with lovely notes of bay leaves on the finale this appears to be at the beginning of it’s drinking window and offers less potential for improvement. Our bottle was decidedly advanced with a nose full of soy tones but there was a sneaky note of truffle lurking low in the glass. In the mouth the wine showed a touch fresher and in a pinch would have been drunk but it’s soft, earthy palate really showed this to be evolved and certainly not indicative of the potential quality. A touch tight on the nose with sandy notes and a good violet tone adding some lift. The wild raspberry and lingonberry fruit remains intact and assertive. In the mouth this offers up a rich, sweet core of dark berry fruit. It has more obvious tannin than acid so it sits a bit heavily on the palate and finishes quite short, though there are appealing notes of licorice. This is a bit simple if fun and delicious. 2009-2014 87pts

Decidedly citrussy on the nose with scorched orange rind and classic notes of earth, mineral, sandalwood, talc, campfire ash and dried, fading flowers. Big and round on entry with bright acids and lovely ripe tannins belying it’s age. There is plenty of spicy red berry fruit here and touches of tar and dried herb adding complexity. This has really fine length but ultimately comes off as a bit heavy and clumsy 2009-2016 89pts

The 1989 Produttori del Barbaresco Pora Riserva was another star performer, yet it didn’t make it to my top three. All the components are there for this to be a giving, feminine and elegant Barbaresco, but I believe it will take time to show. On the nose I found herbal tea with honey, soil, rose petals and the slightest hint of black pepper. The palate was very balanced showing red fruit and spice with cedar box and cherry tobacco. This wine was very open for the first couple of hours, and then it shut down in the glass.

Playing true to type the 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is another of the more open wines in this vintage. But that is only in relative terms. Layers of expressive red fruit crushed flowers and spices flesh out in this radiant Barbaresco. In most vintages the Pora is one of the more accessible of the Riservas when young. The close proximity of the vineyard to the Tanaro River results in a warm microclimate that ripens the fruit earlier than elsewhere. In 2008 though the Pora packs a serious punch. The coolness of the late harvest comes through in a finish laced with considerable tension and minerality. This is easily one of the very best Poras I have ever tasted from the Produttori. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048. -Antonio Galloni Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Good full red. More spicy and less floral on the nose than the Paje, offering a scent of musky redcurrant. Less lively on the palate too, showing a firm tannic spine to the redcurrant and tobacco flavors. The tannins build on the aftertaste. In contrast to the two 2009s, this wine is more structured than the Paje. But it’s less fun today.

Theres an iodine and seashore element on the nose, with a note of mint. Cherry and raspberry flavors enter the fray, and the steely tannins lend their taciturn support. Savory, though cool and aloof in character, with moderate length. Best from 2015... Wine Spectator. Pora remains one of the most important vineyards for the Produttori coop. In the past fruit from this vineyard was valued for it's rugged structure and rich body. This bottling, now fully mature reveals the austere, chiseled quality that traditionally made Barbaresco can attain in fine vintages.
