Sweet raspberry fruit greets the nose along with an strong leathery edge, dried herb notes and a touch of chamomile with high toned dried balsamic top notes. Firmly focused in the mouth with nice early acids adding a bit of cut and quite good clarity in the mouth. There is lovely definition to the cranberry/lingonberry toned tart cherry fruit that has a nice balsamic edge all supported by finely ripe tannins. With a bit of licorice on the finish this turns chewy with tannins that close things down a bit though this does end with an elegant, floral inner mouth perfume. 92pts

With big fruit on entry,this has a bit of a soft, broad and mouth filling feel to it, delivering super fresh fruit framed by nice mineral and dried herb tones in the mouth, though with less aromatic intensity than the 09. There’s nice tension on the backend and this finishes a touch short but with good freshness. 91pts

Bright acids on entry with a lightly chewy mid-palate that offers up great, just ripe fruit supported by fine, stiff tannins. Austere and slightly rustic yet with lovely purity to the bitter cherry fruit that leads to a lovely tar and licorice tinged finish of moderate length. Quintessential 1996 and quintessential Ovello. Really textbook stuff but not in a particularly popular model. Just coming out of it’s shell this should be particularly long lived though I would recommend drinking 2011- 2025 92pts
Fleshy and gamey on the nose with background notes of old wood, earth and mineral. Just a few haunting berry tones recall the fruit. Decidedly better in the mouth with a velvety feel and bright red cherry and orange rind tone. This is round and mouth filling with crisp, moderate tannins and zesty acidity that leads to a zesty finish with fine herbal accents. Really lovely transparency and purity here. 2009-2014 90pts
There is great fruit on the nose here with jellied lingonberry and sweet, smoky simmering black berry tones inflected with rusty minerality and deep tobacco and cocoa tones. The minerality gains the upper hand here turning very dusty with an almost saline edge. Fresh and crisp in the mouth with some apple skin astringency up front then deep and lovely with black fruits tinged with mint, mineral and herb tones. This is just a touch soft on the back end with a gentle finish that suggest wild raspberries. Elegant and fine with austere yet minor tannins and a touch short 89pts
The 1990 Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello Riserva had an all-star performance this night, and a number of tasters listed it as their wine of the night. This wine came across as all grace and elegance wrapped in a package of soft, sweet fruit. The nose showed aromas of black cherry, red floral notes, hints of molasses and tobacco. The palate showcased the refined structure of a Nebbiolo just coming to maturity, as soft red fruit washed across the tongue followed by clove and bitters. This was all kept in check by a balanced acidity, which left the mouth watering for more.

This is a full bodied, intense, complex Nebbiolo from one of the many “cru” vineyards owned by Produttori del Barbaresco. It shows bold red-fruits and strong tannins. Save for years or decant now.

The 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is deep, dense and incredibly primary. Although the wine clearly possesses remarkable stuffing, there is very little tertiary development here. With air, suggestions of menthol, pine, spices and licorice gradually emerge, but this remains a wine in need of serious bottle age. Lingering notes of sweetness resonate on the long finish. This austere, but beautiful Barbaresco is destined to develop beautifully in bottle and should offer glorious drinking down the road. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. This has nice freshly sliced plum and peach character. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins, a long finish and an impressive backbone of tannins. Best after 2011. 1,000 cases made. -JS Good full red.
