Editorial Reviews for Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano
Big, deep, wooly and earthy on the nose full of coffee tinged dark cherry that shows an attractive hint of torrefaction and gentle hints of blackberry all topped with hints of balsam and pollen. Really gorgeous on the nose. Powerful yet finely defined in the mouth with good clarity to the rich, slightly blocky blackberry fruit that is long and persistent in the mouth with a clear and intense mineral base. This really is lovely with a fantastic nose but it comes off as just a bit simple on the palate though it is packed with fresh, crisp fruit. This finishes with admirable power and it is a big wine, though so very young but with age this should blossom beautifully. 93pts
Burnished wood pops on the earthy nose, which is dark yet fresh fruit, with a touch of quinine spice accenting the tight, tough and clay mineral, though sweetly floral toned nose. Big rich berry fruit greets the palate here along with nuanced spice notes that are wrapped up in a smooth, lithe palate that is rich with deep mineral notes that lead to a dark tight long finish that does show a hint of warmth. The fruit really turns quite dark cherried in the mouth, supported by nice round tannins that help to drive the briar wood and strawberry seed toned finish. This is complete and deep. A real winner. 93pts
Wow this has a gorgeous nose, sweet and lightly fudgy, tarry and full of dark oily spice notes wrapped in a touch of animal and toastiness. In the mouth this is powerful, a touch dense but not weighty, and chewy with tannin and excellent freshness of dark cherry fruit flecked with mineral and balsamic accent notes. The balance is terrific here and this shows an added level of refinement with tons of ripe tannins on the finish which shows off very ripe strawberry and raspberry fruit. A powerhouse to be sure, this should turn out to be stunning. 94pts
A bit syrupy on the nose with wild red berry fruit tones over some chalky soil notes. There’s a slight hoisin/ sweet tea note here so perhaps this has seen less than ideal storage. A bit fat on entry with an initial rush of black cherry fruit that is followed by a rather flaccid, hot, short mid-palate. The nose develops a sweet candied element with air and the roundness the wine exhibits up front is quickly clipped on the short finish. 86pts
From Magnum This was tight and dusty at first slowly revealing subtle tones of dried rose, roast meat, and a horsy, saddle leather tone. Over the course of the tasting this retained an earthy core that recalled dirty root vegetables and become a touch tarrier. Big and powerful in the mouth with fine, ripe tannins and bracing acidity supporting fresh, slightly astringent wild berry fruits laced with notes of earth, tar and fresh mushrooms. Really nice cleansing finish. Certainly at or close to peak this should develop a bit more aromatic complexity but in the mouth it’s built to deliver power rather than complexity and I don’t see much upside on the palate, particularly from 750ml. 2009-2019 91pts
This offered up a rather unusual combination of beef broth, dried tomato, and cooked bean starch tones that may be due to this bottle seeing a bit of heat along the way. None-the-less there are nice hot iron and faded baking spice notes that keep the nose fresh and interesting. In the mouth this comes off rather soft and elegant with a tapered, lean, feathered feel. There are dark savory tones of coffee and dried olive on the palate but this neither feels nor tastes like a representative bottle. Certainly still drinkable 86pts.
Incredibly fruit driven nose here with a fleshy, rare beef and roasted herb note that just serves to accentuate the almost vanila tinged blackberry/cherry taffy candiedness of the nose. With air a huge note of violet emerges. Big and plush in the mouth with tons of very fine grained tannins. The plush and seductive texture supports black currant fruits with a touch of juniper berry and herbal tones adding some complexity. Seamless and appearently still very young and unevolved this is packed with exceptional raw materials and may very well improve but the lack of complexity is a bit surprising. 92pts

The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano brings together the best qualities of the vintage, with a solid core of intense fruit, expressive aromatics and a measure of tannic heft that will keep the wine fresh and vibrant for many years. Dark cherry, plum, spice and leather notes flesh out on the huge, voluptuous finish. In 2009, the Montestefano is fabulous.
The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano shows a high degree of boldness and opulence. This is an immediately generous wine with soft fruit flavors of blackberry and Morello cherry. It shows thick natural density with good tannin management. You sense the structure at the back but the wine never feels astringent or rough. Riserva Montestefano exhibits a tight, thickly woven texture that will contribute to slow the wine’s future evolution. In other words, this wine is built like a tank.
Round and fruity, this red offers cherry, plum and tea aromas and flavors, with the sweet fruit offset by firm tannins on the back end. An old-school version, from the light color and complex, spice elements to the firm structure. Best from 2014 thro... Wine Spectator. WS 93pts. - WA 93pts. - Winemaker Notes - The extra heat of the south facing slope gives to the Montestefano a fuller body and an almost meaty texture with impressive depth. For all these reasons it is probably the Barbaresco that most reminds of Barolo where tar and roses prevail on the refined violet flavors. Despite this massive attitude it remains a true Barbaresco, never too heavy on the palate and with a classy finish that lingers on the palate without overwhelming our senses.
