Floral and citrus aromas dominate the nose at first then fresh mushroom tones blossom to be joined by a bit of smoldering campfire and slightly roasted wild plum tones. With air this really gains depth and intensity with briary notes and a brilliant blackberry hard candy note. Lean and linear at first this was noticeably tannic and a bit low intensity at first but the core of dark berry and slightly jammy wild strawberry fruit really grew with time. This eventually offered elegance and enveloping depth. Still with a few years of upside potential. 2011-2020 92pts
Autumnal and spicy on the nose with dark, masculine tones of leather, broth and mushroom accenting the blackberry jelly and sweet backing spice toned fruit. Really relaxed and resolved in the mouth with low intensity flavors in a bright, transparent package that offers nice notes of herb and anise tinged fruit but ultimately is a bit simple. 88pt

Add your reviewThe Produttori Moccagatta was classic in every way, and having tasted it blind, was easily confused for being a Barolo. The nose started out muted, but with a short time in the glass, a bouquet of dried cherry, potpourri, menthol and dark, dark chocolate filled the senses. On the palate, intense tart cherry washed across the senses with notes of cedar but was quickly subdued by fine tannin. Penetrating red fruits stayed through the finish in good balance against this wine’s tense structure. The Moccagatta was dark, mysterious and truly seductive on the nose with a truly classic feel on the palate.
The 1990 Produttori del Barbaresco Moccagatta Riserva showcased another good, but not great, performance with sour red fruits, pepper, licorice and undergrowth on the nose. The palate had a good balance with resolved red fruit, holiday spice and honey. The finish was fresh.

The Moccagatta vineyard sees only morning sun and produces wines with great complexity and full body. Showing intense fruit, firm tannins and a very long finish, this wine is extremely elegant, fruit forward with a refined bouquet. Perfect with pasta dishes, risotto, game, and cheese.

"The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is arguably the most open and expressive of the 2008 Riservas. It presents a gorgeous soft core of fruit to match an open personality. Although I wouldn’t suggest opening any of the 2008 Riservas for pleasure anytime soon, readers who want to get an early look at the wines should start with the Muncagota. Sweet rose petals add nuance to the vibrant fruit on the structured finish. This is a great showing from the Muncagota. As a reminder, the Muncagota is the wine that was previously called Moccagatta, before the current set of vineyard-naming conventions was introduced with the 2007 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038...93." WA 10/12
