Editorial Reviews for Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Asili
From Magnum This was tight and dusty at first slowly revealing subtle tones of dried rose, roast meat, and a horsy, saddle leather tone. Over the course of the tasting this retained an earthy core that recalled dirty root vegetables and become a touch tarrier. Big and powerful in the mouth with fine, ripe tannins and bracing acidity supporting fresh, slightly astringent wild berry fruits laced with notes of earth, tar and fresh mushrooms. Really nice cleansing finish. Certainly at or close to peak this should develop a bit more aromatic complexity but in the mouth it’s built to deliver power rather than complexity and I don’t see much upside on the palate, particularly from 750ml. 2009-2019 91pts
A decidedly leathery tone initially but then this really began to unfold aromatically yielding a fleshy, slightly dried cherry/sour cherry core of fruit with complicating notes of forest floor, bat leaf, menthol and cigar ash. In the mouth the attack features big acids and big though superbly ripe tannins. The structural elements are balanced and really well integrated into the tight core of dark wild berry fruits. There is a succulence on the long finish that draws one back to the glass for another sip. This would have benefitted from a better glass and more time to breath but is really lovely right now and still has significant potential for positive development. 2009-2023 91pts
Our bottle was decidedly advanced with a nose full of soy tones but there was a sneaky note of truffle lurking low in the glass. In the mouth the wine showed a touch fresher and in a pinch would have been drunk but it’s soft, earthy palate really showed this to be evolved and certainly not indicative of the potential quality. This on the other hand was totally rocking, pumping out layered aromatics of dried orange rind, angelica root, floral tones, rosehips, sweet bay leaf, fleshy dark fruits and fine balsamic candle wax top notes. Aromatically fine and precise. Racy entry with superb balance that leads to an elegant mid-palate with rich ripe fruit flavors that dance around the mouth with wonderfully vibrant energy This is so lively and complex without huge weight. It is simply authoritative. Brilliant stuff 2009-2020 95pts
Nettle, white rocks, seared cherry, lingoneberry and delicate wild flowers explode from the glass then there is a base of truffly freshly tilled earth, beef broth, dried rose, cough syrup, mocha and a medicinal menthol tone to linger over. Richly fruited with intense wild berry fruit, tobacco, mineral, aromatic wood, leather and white pepper nuances. Sweet tannins and superb length with a lean, transparent, sinewy feel. Fantastic. 94pts
ruby red; on the nose mint and licorice; on the palate candied cherries, leather, burnt fruit, meaty tannins
The 1989 Produttori del Barbaresco Pora Riserva was another star performer, yet it didn’t make it to my top three. All the components are there for this to be a giving, feminine and elegant Barbaresco, but I believe it will take time to show. On the nose I found herbal tea with honey, soil, rose petals and the slightest hint of black pepper. The palate was very balanced showing red fruit and spice with cedar box and cherry tobacco. This wine was very open for the first couple of hours, and then it shut down in the glass.
The 1979 Produttori del Barbaresco Asili Riserva, came across as slightly corked, but you could still sense this wine’s dark, earthy qualities through it all. On the nose, there was a burst of old library books, but with a little more exploration I found green peas, with dark, almost black fruits and topsoil. The palate showed tight with faded cherry and tar, but it gave way to a pleasant sour red fruit finish. I’d love to try another bottle of this wine to see it in all its glory.

Though fleshy, this red shows elegance and austerity at its core, courtesy of the firm, dry tannins and spicy underbrush flavors. The dried cherry fruit shows hints of rose and licorice, and this ends with a long, if tannic, finish, with fine potenti... Wine Spectator. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Asili 750ml
Not a big Barbaresco, but a perfumed, delicate and very friendly red, with strawberry and floral character on the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Best after 2011.
The 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Asili conveys an impression of sheer luxuriousness as it coats the palate with waves of ripe fruit that nearly manage to cover the wine's tannins. Generous and expansive on the palate, the wine reveals tons of depth and richness, with a long, satisfying finish. This remains a vibrant, pure Barbaresco in need of cellaring, yet readers who want to take this bottling out for a test drive won't be disappointed, but beware, the wine shut down quickly in the glass. Simply put, this is sublime stuff. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024.
Good full, medium red. Sexy, vibrant aromas of strawberry, flowers, truffle and minerals. Silky-sweet on entry, then energetic and strong in the middle, boasting lovely stuffing and superb definition. This rather powerful vintage of Asili really projects its fruit on the strong finish, which features serious tannic grip. The Produttori’s Asili bottling has been my default purchase here since the late ’70s.
Good full red. Subtly complex nose melds raspberry, truffle and underbrush lifted by floral high notes. Silky-sweet but subdued, with a fine-grained texture and lovely balance and mineral complexity. Displays more breadth and power than the Pora and Rio, and the rising finish shows suaver tannins and serious persistence.
WA 93pts. - WS 92pts. - Winemaker Notes - This spectacular vineyard has created in the past some of the greatest Barbaresco and it has a strong following all over the world. The wine is intense, certainly not a monster but nevertheless with a very imposing personality. Usually quite close in its youth it opens up slowly showing impeccable complexity and style a classic Barbaresco, and also one of the most distinctive vineyard of the region.
"One of the absolute highlights in this portfolio of utterly amazing wines, the 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Asili possesses marvelous depth and richness, but also little of the early approachability and sexiness of Asili. With time in the glass, the wine’s inner perfume gradually emerges, but ultimately this is a Barbaresco to bury in the deepest corner of the cellar. Once again, the Produttori have done a fabulous job with the Asili. The 2008 has nerves of steel and a huge, never-ending finish. It is by far the most imposing and structured Asili I have ever tasted from the Produttori. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048...96"WA 10/2012
