Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Big burnished fruit with a slightly roasted quality greets the nose along with a wonderfully spicy character bright with rosemary and menthol top notes. Smooth and silky, with some power in the mouth, there’s a burnished, slightly spicy sandalwood quality here, a little vitamin c, slightly mineral quality as well on a palate that is pretty seamless. This shows good power, not the most complex bottling today but with good persistence and follow through on the finish. 90pts

Founded in 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. From its humble beginnings making the first three vintages in the church basement, Produttori del Barbaresco has grown to a 52 member co-operative with 250 acres of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation and an annual production of over 500,000 bottles. Its vineyards amount to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each member is in full control of their land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with the skill and dedication they have honed over generations. Playing a key role in elevating the quality level of Barbaresco over the years, Produttori del Barbaresco produces a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe, a Barbaresco blend and nine single vineyard wines produces in premier vineyards: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo. subtle, woodsmoke, flowers, perfume, mint, fresh fruit coulis, prosciutto, good acids, medium body, fresh fruit, red cherry, wild berry, very soft tannins, a touch meaty and a touch peppery on the MP, really nice feel with depth and richness yet not heavy in any way, lovely spiced berry fruit leads to a subtle long pomegranate seed finale

This stands in stark contrast to the Giacosa iopening with greater intensity on the nose with it's sandy core over which is piled slightly roasted red cherry, licorice cough lozenge, nettles, and lingering smoke. Bigger and richer in the mouth, this retains good acidity and has solid drying tannins, surprisingly powerful with dark, juicy fruits on the palate and a wooly mouthfeel. This peaks early in the mouth and stutters down a rustic and slight clumsy staircase and it rumbles to a finale. While this is simple outclassed by the Giacosa it is a solid mouthful of Barbaresco. Drink now - 2017

Strong tobacco notes waft immediately from the glass. With air they are joined by notes of leather, tree bark, dried wild flowers, coffee and salted plums. In the mouth this is dark and precise with a cool bitter cherry core of fruit that is bright and fresh but rather uncomplicated. This is fine and really does capture the essence of bitter cherry with perhaps a touch of bitter melon rind but it’s also a bit short. At peak and lovely for it’s captured fruit. 2009-2016 89pts

This was wonderfully layered with a deep base of dried fruits and baked plums over which one found dried bay leaf, smoky earthy tones, asphalt and top notes of herbs, nettles and just a touch of ass. Aggressive and a touch astringent in the mouth this none-the-less is wonderfully precise and faceted with deep, extracted black fruits and spice tones. This was firmly at peak and really epitomized the power of the vintage. 2009-2017 91pts

[Vino] Tasted at a tasting of 5 selections presented by Aldo Vacca from Produttori del Barbaresco; included 4 1999s; didnt take detailed notes, but this best of the bunch.

[Garlic pizza, meatballs] Decanted for ~1 hr. Mild red fruit and anise on the nose. On the palate, burnt orange, clove, cherry burst, tannins. As expected less fruit than the '97 Rio Sordo; found the '97 more distinctive. Cleaner (and IMO preferable) compared to the '96 Asili that I had last night.

The 1990 Produttori del Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva was the least favorite of from all the 1990s. This wine left me feeling as if it never found its place between ripeness or finesse. The nose showed dark fruit with brown sugar, yet it had a freshness to it that was very inviting. On the palate I found red cherry and cedar, but it was a bit muddled and with a tannic finish. Honestly, it may not have been great, but it was still enjoyable.

Good medium red. Deeper and more delineated on the nose than the Pora, with a cherry aroma lifted by spice. Sweet, lush and fine-grained, but with good energy and verve. Turns firmer on the back half, showing a medicinal menthol quality, solid tan... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva 750ml

Tannins are never dominant in the wines from this vineyards; instead the Rio Sordo has a silky quality on the palate that makes it extremely attractive and seductive, never imposing: like a young, beautiful, aristocratic girl at her first debut into society: modest, shy, but totally confident of her beauty.

Maybe that is why the Rio Sordo is an all time favorite of my dearest friend, superb wine taster and president of Vias Imports, Mr. Fabrizio Pedrolli.

The 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is one of the better versions of this wine I can remember. There is considerable depth and richness in the fruit here as this sweet, layered Barbaresco opens up in the glass. The typical spiced, floral Rio Sordo notes are amply present in the wine, but in 2004 there is an additional level of concentration and richness that has eluded previous vintages. This is a beautiful Rio Sordo from the Produttori. Anticipated maturity: 2010andndash;2020.

Subtle aromas of raspberry and strawberry jam follow through to a medium-to-full body, with soft tannins and an aftertaste of fresh fruit. A balanced and very pretty wine. Best after 2010.

Sattes Kirschrot.
