Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight and restrained on the nose with lots of cinnamon, a bit of bay leaf, still tight with floral top notes, a hint of jerky and menthol, and a sneaky rosebud top note. With a lovely blend of freshness and power in the mouth, this is complex and detailed, showing tension in the mouth while delivering a broad palate impression. There’s an incipient hint of fungi adding complexity to the small wild cherry, strawberry fruit that picks up some black spice on the finish but maintains fine transparency from the start through the long finish. Seamless and firm with classic tannic structure, this is quite fine. 93pts

Founded in 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. From its humble beginnings making the first three vintages in the church basement, Produttori del Barbaresco has grown to a 52 member co-operative with 250 acres of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation and an annual production of over 500,000 bottles. Its vineyards amount to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each member is in full control of their land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with the skill and dedication they have honed over generations. Playing a key role in elevating the quality level of Barbaresco over the years, Produttori del Barbaresco produces a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe, a Barbaresco blend and nine single vineyard wines produces in premier vineyards: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo. Sweet at first then turning a bit deep this nose offers up compelling complexity with layered notes of tar, dried rose, slightly roasted beef and ripe cherry tones, a touch of anise and a hint of leathery brett. Really superb clarity and precision on the nose. Tight and taut in the mouth with a fine balance yet it’s packed with fruit. Still awkwardly youthful and tight there are feints of wild berry fruit that wash over the tongue only to be slapped away b the waves of ripe tannin that follow. A very long if particularly lean tobacco toned finish lingers with fine, fruit driven inner mouth perfumes. Really fantastic stuff 2012-2024 94pts.

Tight on the nose with burnt wood, sweet licorice, soil and funghi tones but this remains hard and a bit unevolved. It does gain some complexity with air, camphor and leather, but remains a bit rustic on the nose. This is rich on the palate and the acidity is a touch soft allowing the earthy cherry fruit to dominate the entry. On the backend this turns a bit more complex with woodsy notes of mushrooms. With air this really gains some nice depth and fills the mouth but always retains a certain rusticitiy. A wonderfully at peak bottle. 91pts

Lovely aromatics here with seared cherry fruit built over layered oyster shells, rosewater and nori. The fruit takes on a wild tone and gains fine top notes of black tea and dried leaves. In the mouth this seems a bit washed out with a rich weighty palate impression yet subtle flavors of dark cherry and mineral. The acidity here is just adequate yielding a wine that is big, powerful and ungainly. 2009-2014 88pts

This offers up deep and muscular notes of earthy macerated cherries, charred campfire, insinuations of porcini and adds a light prosciutto element, a touch of black pepper and fresh cane clippings with a menthol top note to the remarkably fresh nose. Youthful in the mouth with sweet, tarry fruit that is dense and chewy but very fresh. Really fine and perfectly mature preserving the balanced and slightly rustic style of the vintage that pairs so well with the earthy, dark fruit. Another testament to the greatness that is the Produttori Coop. 93pts

Sweet and crystaline and slow to open with concrete dust and a touch of salt air emerging from the glass then dusty pez candy and an intense bloom of fresh florality. The pez grows in intensity and turns toward a distinct raspberry tone with an astringent note and a very fine background of forest floor, bramble, and coriander. Bright in the mouth with solid tannins, rich elegant and suave with mineral tinged red fruits up front then a spicy floral mid-palate that leads to the red currant tinged finish with florishes of tar, licorice, and treebark. Elegant in a masculine way and surprisingly rich 92pts

Again offering a wonderful array of aromatics this started off with notes of leather and dried rose then turned smoky and exotic with tea tones, some chamomile and even a hint of jasmine. Eventually turning savory and deep with a tarry edge and a hint of shoeblack. Richly fruited though still slightly drying this offered up waves of layered flavor with chunky plum tones, earth, aromatic lift in the mouth from the VA. Turning a bit spicy with a touch of black pepper and a hint of roasted herbal tones adding some length. This is broad and muscular with fine balance. Firmly at peak and with a good future. 2009-2017 93pts

The 2000 Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja Riserva was big and burly on this evening. It was very ripe but with a lot of structure beneath it all. One thing that kept entering my mind while inhaling the aroma of this wine was spiced ginger cookies. There was red fruit and tar, but it was so dark and hot that I couldn’t get past that almost sickeningly sweet aroma. The palate showed black cherry and licorice with tannins and acidity fighting for superiority. It’s very possible that this wine will calm down one day, but for now, I found it unpalatable.

A fleshy style, whose cherry and raspberry fruit is accented by tobacco and tea flavors. The tannins are rustic, flexing their muscle on the firm finish. Best from 2014 through 2025.

Good full red. Reticent but very pure nose opens to reveal cherry, plum, spices, mocha and smoke. Broad, concentrated and deep but very young and inexpressive today. This seriously thick, layered Barbaresco displays very good definition and finishes with excellent length and energy.

The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja is a big, dark wine loaded with dark fruit, menthol, tar, flowers, mint, rosemary and an array of balsamic notes that develop in the glass. The Rabaja possesses stunning depth to match its muscular tannins. It is a dazzling wine endowed with tons of inner perfume and sheer personality as it saturates the palate from start to finish. Today, the Rabaja comes across as huge and almost Barolo like, but it has plenty of Rabaja character. Purists will want to age the wine for a number of years to allow the baby fruit to drop off, but the truth is, it is pretty stunning even today. Anticipated maturity: 2017–2037.

Good full red. Sexy, ripe aromas of raspberry, mocha and underbrush. Sweet, lush, full and sweet; in contrast to a number of these 2005s, this displays plenty of baby fat today. Not yet complex but finishes broad, full and long, with ripe, building tannins. Shows less acid cut than the Moccagatta but more tannins.

Very floral, with blackberry and plum character. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and silky, refined tannins. Gorgeous finish. Best after 2008.
