Editorial Reviews for Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Montefico Riserva
Tight and restrained on the nose with lots of cinnamon, a bit of bay leaf, still tight with floral top notes, a hint of jerky and menthol, and a sneaky rosebud top note. With a lovely blend of freshness and power in the mouth, this is complex and detailed, showing tension in the mouth while delivering a broad palate impression. There’s an incipient hint of fungi adding complexity to the small wild cherry, strawberry fruit that picks up some black spice on the finish but maintains fine transparency from the start through the long finish. Seamless and firm with classic tannic structure, this is quite fine. 93pts
Tight on the nose with burnt wood, sweet licorice, soil and funghi tones but this remains hard and a bit unevolved. It does gain some complexity with air, camphor and leather, but remains a bit rustic on the nose. This is rich on the palate and the acidity is a touch soft allowing the earthy cherry fruit to dominate the entry. On the backend this turns a bit more complex with woodsy notes of mushrooms. With air this really gains some nice depth and fills the mouth but always retains a certain rusticitiy. A wonderfully at peak bottle. 91pts
A bit baked on the nose with notes of clay tile, baked raspberry and hints of burnt marshmallow and, leather and cooked bean starch. Sweet with lovely integrated structure and a fine lightness, this remains fresh and elegant with round fruit but does have a bit of a drop out on the middle. The rich wild berry and wild plum tones pick up again and lead to a fine finish with notes of clay and flowers but the dip is a bit troubling. This probably is at or just passing peak so drinking sooner rather than later is advised. 2009-2013 88pts
Sweet and crystaline and slow to open with concrete dust and a touch of salt air emerging from the glass then dusty pez candy and an intense bloom of fresh florality. The pez grows in intensity and turns toward a distinct raspberry tone with an astringent note and a very fine background of forest floor, bramble, and coriander. Bright in the mouth with solid tannins, rich elegant and suave with mineral tinged red fruits up front then a spicy floral mid-palate that leads to the red currant tinged finish with florishes of tar, licorice, and treebark. Elegant in a masculine way and surprisingly rich 92pts
wine was okay. value for money not so good.

The 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is another of the larger-scaled wines in this lineup. It reveals a profile of ripe red fruits, spices and menthol wrapped into a seamless yet structured frame. This Barbaresco doesn't quite have the level of profoundness of the finest wines in this vintage, but it comes awfully close. Shades of Bruno Giacosas 1971 Barbaresco Montefico linger on the long and immensely satisfying finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
"...one of the more striking wines in the range. Deeply expressive with regard to place, the Montefico is laced with dark cherry, plum, menthol, licorice, spice notes, all supported by the firm, incisive tannins and vibrant salinity that are the hallmark of this great site. There is little doubt the Montefico is one of the highlights in this range of 2009 Riservas from the Produttori. This is a terrific showing...94" AG 10/13
