What to Expect

Barbaresco is a wine that shares much with its close neighbor Barolo. Both are made with the Nebbiolo grape and from nearly contiguous plots of vines in Piedmont. The slightly warmer climate of Barbaresco, and resulting earlier harvest, makes these wines a touch lighter and less complex than Barolo, if more elegant and earlier maturing. They share much the same flavor profile with their siblings though tend to be less intense.

From one of the best co-operatives in the world - and a wonderful barbaresco producer. Still young and tannic, but opens up after a few hours. Light colored, with a little tar and tobacco. Not sure this is one for the ages - but enjoyable.

This had a potent but slightly unfocused nose of tar, leather, cherries and earth. The palate was so forward for such a young Barbaresco from this estate. Still there was nice acid a great clarity to the wine. Powerful and concentrated but in a very accessible way. A light, ruby-colored nebbiolo. The nose is a pungent earthy/cherry mix that almost approaches cough syrup on the palate with it's intensity. Still quite young/tight with a good bit of astringency. Breathing for a day mellowed it out some.

Not bad but not great...at least not yet.

This comes from a "Cantine Sociale", also known as a cooperative of growers known as Produttori del Barbaresco. This is in fact the most important wine of their lineup since it comprises the bulk of their production. Youthful upon opening with dark berries and chalk-driven tannins.

Brick red color

Aroma - Tar, cherry, earth, tobbaco, smoke, leather

Flavor - Cherry, earthy funk, tar, smoke, fairly complex, strong tannins.

Comments - Excellent cooperative (I believe they were the originator of Barbaresco wines) Good value, drinkable wine excellent example of Nebbiolo (an underappreciated grape) very approachable.

Perhaps the greatest cooperative in the world. The consistant quality that this group puts out year after year fpr such an affordable price is astonishing. This wine can get you drinking good quality nebbiolo at a reasonable price with out having to wait 12-15 years for a Barolo. I am not suggesting this wine is of the caliper of a great Barolo...but it is a good start to appreciating the varietal which to me is the greatest of them all. Enough tannins to lay down and age for years and yet accessible in just a few short years in the bottle. Red berries, minerality and firm tannins are charicteristic of read more...
