Prima Materia Aglianico 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

Known as the Cabernet of Basilicata in Southern Italy, Aglianico bridges the gap between Old and New World wine with Lake County closely matching its home terroir at 1400’ elevation. Savory red cherry, raspberry, and deep black fruit backed by dark spice, firm tannin and acid, with minerality galore and classic undertones of graphite, iron, herb and earth. Rustic yet refined, and very food friendly with a robust meal that can match it. Potential aging 10+ years, improving all the while. 2013 Vintage One of the earlier vintages in a while, 2013 started early, yet was moderate throughout with not too much heat, no cold spells, and wrapped up about one week early. A tiny bit of September rain was trouble free and gave the vines a timely breather. Ripeness was spot on, and concentration with another drought year kept berries small and yields down. The vintage yielded a fruit-forward Aglianico with a classic finish. Take away: do extended gentle maceration on a portion with a bit of stem, but pretty happy with texture if a little “California forward” in spirit.
