Pride Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley(1999)

Bring on the big guns! Not a wine for the meek, if this wine doesn’t knock your socks off, they must be glued to your feet. One of the darkest Cabs we’ve ever bottled, it is a wine like this that gets people excited about big, blockbuster, California Cabs. Starting with 95+ points from Robert Parker on the first Pride Reserve Cab in 1994 and followed by 98 points on the 1995, 99 points on the 1996 and 97+ points on the 1997, (still no word on the 1998) this has long been the critics favorite - and if the length of our waiting list is any indication, yours too! (this and the reserve claret were bottled at the beginning of November of 2001) Good full ruby-red. Very complex, Bordeaux-like aromas of currant, mace, brown sugar and lead pencil. Dense and sweet but laid-back and rather subtle; kaleidoscopic flavors of dried cherry, roasted coffee bean, licorice, shoe polish and tobacco leaf. Here the firm tannins are less obviously buffered by mid-palate material. Finishes with a perfumed note of dried herbs. A bit less sophisticated than the reserve claret, notes Foley.

Black-ruby. Brilliantly pure aromas of cassis, blackberry and bitter chocolate. Dense and thick but sharply delineated thanks to powerful underlying structure. Very intense flavors of black fruits. Impressively long on the finish, with tannins thoroughly buffered by the wine sheer material. "This is our wimpiest lot of cabernet in '99," said Foley, who went on to show me several darker and more powerful components that will serve as the foundation for the Pride reserve wines as well as contribute to this "basic" cabernet bottling.

(from vines just yards across the county line) Good medium ruby-red. Sappy aromas of black- and redcurrant, licorice, brown spices and shoe polish. Denser than the cabernet franc bottling, with a higher pitch despite its creamy-sweet berry flavors. Exotic oak adds another layer of flavor to this already enticing but still young cabernet. Foley loves the traditional Radoux barrels, mostly from center-of-France oak and about 20% from Vosges wood.
