Pratsch Gruner 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

The Pratsch is one of the best gruners we’ve tasted in a long time and a customer favorite. For one thing, it tastes like gruner — some apple and citrus fruit but not too much, a spiciness (white pepper?) and not a trace of sweetness, either in the fruit or the wine itself. This is a crisp wine (but not as zingy as a sauvignon blanc) that will pair with almost any kind of food — I drank it with pork jambalaya, and it worked well with the dish’s spiciness. Also great with asian dishes.

Lightly aromatic on the nose with hints o white pepper and dried grass accenting the lime and green pear aromas. Rather spritzy right out of the bottle. This shows off rather assertively dried herbal and lightly spicy flavors with good intensity. There's some subtle fruit here, lime pith and melon rind, but this is as savory as it is fruity and turns somewhat steely on the modest finish. Good intensity to the flavors and well balanced, this is an interesting if small and somewhat simple wine. Should be great with simple food. Comes in a liter bottle. 86pts

Modern style Grüner Veltliner. Fresh, light, fruity and easy to drink. Definitely my favorite!

Fresh, crisp, dry opening, with a soft blend of lemon and melon that lingers delicately. Perfect with mussels, shrimp or other seafood.

Summer arrived, finally, the weather was close to 100 F. So break out the gruner. One liter, only 13 or so dollars. A little spritzig (frizzante if you like). Thirst quenching, not too high in alcohol. Just perfect for a meal of whatever you don't want to light the stove for. Or for a little fish, or a chicken sausage. Whatever. It's summer, and this is my summer wine. Other gruners may be more complex, but that's not why I drink it.
