Pozzan Pinot Noir 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

- lightly smoky and tarry but ultimately earthy cola, clove and allspice tinged black cherry fruit. While decidedly new world on the nose there is a bit of restraint and that earthiness that keeps this interesting. - Medium bodied with good intensity to the earthy, slightly tarry black cherry and boysenberry fruit with a nice base of tannin and bright acid offering good support. There’s a nice purity to the fruit even though the oak makes itself known and a nice herbal flourish on the finish gives this an added level of complexity. This could use a bit more length but at this price it’s pretty much a steal. Pair this with a nice grilled salmon dish. 87pts

Michael Pozzan Winery is owned and operated by Michael and Mary Ann Pozzan, both natives of California. Michael was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, but spent his summer months with his grandparents on their 35 acre vineyard estate in Sonoma County. Michael's grandfather purchased the land in the town of Healdsburg after WWII and planted Zinfandel grapes which he sold to local wineries. He always made sure that he retained a portion of the grapes to make his own wine. With roots extending to Piemonte, Italy, Michael's family still owns the original vineyard that Michael's great grandfather planted over 100 years ago. Michael has benefited greatly from his family's experience and expertise, and has continued the tradition by creating fine wines here in California. Michael Pozzan Winery was founded in 1991 and is based in Oakville, California, in the heart of the Napa Valley. The winery currently produces 95,000 cases a year and distributes its wine throughout the United States in selected markets. The wine is sold under four labels, Michael Pozzan, Annabella, Dante, and Contrada. The Michael Pozzan Reserve wines, produced from grapes grown in the Napa and Sonoma regions, are of the finest quality and have won numerous medals and awards. The collection includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The Annabella line is a collection of Napa wines that are sourced from premium vineyards throughout the valley. Named in honor of Michael's grandmother, they include a Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot. These wines represent not only quality, but value as well. Because of their popularity, the Annabella wines are allocated on an annual basis. The Dante Wine Collection was inspired by Michael's travels through the Tuscan countryside and is named after Michael and Mary Ann's eldest son, Michael Dante Pozzan. The collection includes a Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. They are made in the Italian style with well-balanced fruit and nice acid, which allows the wines to match well with a variety of foods. The Contrada wines are the latest creation for Michael Pozzan Winery. Contrada refers to the small neighborhoods found in the northern Tuscany region of Italy. These handcrafted wines are reminiscent of the local wines produced from that area. Our winery is committed to producing fine wines that represent quality and value. Michael Pozzan wines can be enjoyed with good food, family, friends and all who share the love of wine. Read less

In its High School yearbook, this wine was voted most likely to become Paul Newman's Butter Boom popcorn. There are some redeeming qualities, and the aroma is strong and pleasant, the way popcorn is. Recommend pairing with Schindler's list or The Fisher King.

Spiced cherry, cinnamon and other baking spices, flanked by a bit of powder and heat make way for tarter flavors of cranberry, cherry, a bit of citrus acidity, and loads of buttery oak.

Gamey spicy nose followed up by a fantastic pinot experience - fall leaves, cola, spice - all your favorites - they're all here!
