When uncorked, my bottle smelled like a winery. Like the actual barrel room in a winery, with all the good bits and slightly-off bits and floating-off angels' share of oxidized vapors. This, as you can imagine, is both good and bad. There were other things that I liked, however, in the way that is smells. All purple and mashed, with plums and sultry sweet things marching off in the direction of mocha and a tease of something blacker, like licorice. When drunk, however, this merlot gets a bit hung up. Fifteen months in French oak has provided this wine with a spicy nose, giving way to toasty plum and blackberry flavors. This full-bodied wine is a perfect complement with steak or roast beef.
