Possums Vineyard Shiraz Mclaren Vale 2009

External Review:

Saturated ruby. Ripe aromas of dark cherry, crandegrave;me de mure, roasted coffee and grilled fennel, with rich, musky notes of smoke and peat; riper and darker in character today than the 2004. Thick, dense and viscous, with sweet, rich flavors of blackberry and chocolate, plus a light toffee/caramel quality. Outsized and creamy on the back, showing slightly syrupy texture. Large-scaled, sweet and fat; in fact, this calls to mind a bright, fresh barrel sample of vintage port. Very little oak spice is present in either of these vintages; itandrsquo;s all about the fruit.

Our company philosophy is based on producing Estate Wines as all our wines are produced from grapes grown on our own vineyards. Because we grow a number of different grape varieties and have a range of microclimates with in our vineyards we are able to produce a range of different and interesting wines. Our winemaking approach is based on the adage “quality starts in the vineyard”. Wine quality is affected by many factors but perhaps the most important is picking time. We carefully monitor all our blocks to determine grape maturity measuring sugar and acid levels but also tasting the berries for flavour maturity. We have a senior experienced winemaker and a winery with sufficient fermentation and storage capacity to enable us to process the annual grape production of our vineyards. Our wine making facilities include refrigeration units in order to pre-cool the musts and ferments. We also have invested in an air-conditioned bottle and barrel store that enables us to closely control the quality of our wines during production and maturation . We believe we are able to express the inherent qualities of Mclaren Vale grown grapes in our range of wines . Read less

The smooth, sweet fruit of this wine is saturated with oak, blurring the flavor until it takes on air. Itandrsquo;s concentrated and overripe, so the black flavors may gain more clarity with a few years of age.

Think of black-strap molasses as you pour this wine since it is nearly as dark (but pours much more quickly). This lumbering aroma also seeps from the wine along with bittersweet chocolates and overly ripe raspberries. The full body envelops your mouth with tastes of pepper leather ginger red berries and of course molasses. This wine is superb on its own but something rich like filet mignon garlic-mashed potatoes and creamed spinach would only make the experience that much more gratifying.

The spectacular 2002 Shiraz is a fully blended barrel sample scheduled to be bottled in October. It was produced from one-third of the 2001's yields, which is reflected in its extraordinary concentration and intensity. An inky/purple color is accompanied by gorgeously sweet aromas of blueberries, blackberries, and vanilla. Full-bodied, with thrilling texture, tremendous levels of glycerin, and a viscous, seamless, lush finish, it will provide sumptuous drinking during its first 7-10 years of life. The 15% alcohol is cunningly concealed beneath a wealth of extract and glycerin.

Smooth and seductive, with mocha and macaroon character from oak on top of the fine blackberry and licorice notes at the core. Drink now through 2009.
