Porcupine Ridge Syrah 2013

Member Review by outyourcrushes:

I’m a big fan of the earthy, solid wines being produced in South Africa and it’s hard to beat the value found there. The 2009 Porcupine Ridge Syrah is no exception. This is a beautiful bottle of wine loaded with big, wild flavors. Immediate and forward tones of crushed black pepper surround the nose, but don’t overpower the smashed raspberry and mulberry elements. There is also some sneaky licorice hiding in there as well. As with most syrah, this bottle offers a thick, rich texture on the palate with a long finish and a surprise burst of raw chocolate as it lingers.

Rich and powerful dark fruit flavours with loads ofpepper and violets. Well structured palate with smooth tannins and lingering mouth feel. Judicious use of oak adds to the profile without overpowering the fruit. Good density with a delicious aftertaste.

This Syrah has a rustic but elegant nature: aromas of raspberry, black pepper, smoked sausage and cloves prevail, while full-bodied but integrated flavors of anise, pepper and berry follow. The wine is robust but has a velvety character and a spicy finish.

Fresh, with an iron note running through the black tea, braised fig and dark cherry fruit notes. There's a nice plush edge to the open-knit finish. Drink now.

A second-label offering from the famed Boekenhoutskloof estate, Porcupine Ridge over-delivers with intense black fruit flavors, hints of earth, and luscious coffee and chocolate notes. It strikes a stylistic balance between Old World and New.

All of these Porcupine Ridge Wines are excellent values. The medium to dark ruby-colored 2000 Syrah has a sexy, sweaty, black raspberry and blackberry-scented nose. This Northern Rhône-like Syrah is filled with sweet black raspberries, currants, and hints of leather. It could easily pass for a top-flight St. Joseph. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

Winemaker's notes: A rich warm ruby colour with generous viscosity combines with our typical spicy aromatic profile. This wine is dominated by spicey tones yet supported by dark fruit flavours. The palate is generous and extends to a lengthy finish with the focus being on fruit profile as opposed to oaking detail. Drink now or enjoy over next 3 5 years.
