Ponzi Willamette Valley Pinot Noir(2005)

ARVEST 2005: 2005 was one of the coolest growing seasons in the last 10 – 15 years. A winter drought and early, warm spring resulted in bud break in mid-March. An ensuing cold spell slowed bud break until the first part of April, although it was still considered early. A fairly wet spring and moderate summer resulted in later ripening with October bringing substantial rainfall just when fruit was achieving maturity. Harvest was interspersed with rainfall and bursts of sun with windows of dryness dictating picking. This was a vintage for diligent vineyard management and experienced winemaking.Winemakers read more...

The wine Dick and Nancy Ponzi hung their star on 4 decades ago is still one of the most consistent wines in the region. Years ago I attended a tasting of their first 25 vintages and found the wines needed at least 9 or 10 years to really hit their stride. However I find the current release to be delicious in its youth. Blended from seven vineyards, it is classic Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. A nose of lush cherry, fresh herbs and spicy cola. The palate is enticingly well balanced with violet, cherry and pomegranate flavors.

From a classic Oregon vintage comes the Reserve selection from Ponzi, a winery dedicated for the last 4 decades to promoting the bounty of the Willamette Valley. Notes of raspberry, licorice, and cardammon comprise this Pinot, with a toasty vanilla finish. Ponzi is know for the great acidity in their Pinots; a perfect food wine.

($35) Light, bright red. Spicy cherry and redcurrant aromas enlivened by cracked pepper and baking spices. Crisp, focused and light, with sweet strawberry and redcurrant flavors and fine-grained tannins. An elegant, silky, fresh wine that finishes with an intriguing bittersweet quality.

My third or fourth bottle from Willamette in the past few weeks, this is quickly becoming my favorite region! Really nice bottle... nice body, smooth and even, and best of all remarkably reasonable. Just goes to show that "vintage" is overrated. This young 2005 is better than most 5-7 year old Pinots I've had.
