What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

Alfred Tesseron is currently producing astonishing wines that are easily ofSuper-Second Growth quality. This is one of the great wines of 2006. The workhe has done in the vineyards, using organic and in some cases biodynamicmethods, has clearly paid off in this tricky year. The wine has a spicy, brambly fruit nose followed by a tight-knit palate packed full of blackcurrantand raspberry fruit with cedar and coffee hints. The wine's focus, purity andminerality acts as a perfect counterpoint to its harmonious richness. This isan utterly complete wine, and a must-buy. Drink: 2016-2030.<br/>

Parker review: The 2006 is a wine to stockpile, especially for those in their thirties and
forties as it needs another decade to reach maturity, after which it should
keep for 30+ years. This vineyard, just south of Mouton Rothschild, has
produced an opaque bluish/purple-colored 2006 with an extraordinarily pure nose
of graphite, charcoal, sweet creme de cassis, and a hint of scorched earth.
Incredible concentration, stunning richness, and a 60-second finish result in a
wine that transcends the vintage as well as this estate's 1855
classification. read more...
