A serendipitous luncheon with his soon-to-be muse Odette Pol Roger, proved to<br/>be the start of a very happy relationship between Churchill and the famous<br/>Champagne House, a relationship now in its twelfth vinous commemoration with<br/>the launch of the 1999 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, a wine made only in<br/>very special years. Challenging is perhaps an equally appropriate epithet for<br/>1999, some untimely rain in September taking the edge off what hitherto looked<br/>set to be an excellent vintage, which has had to settle for recognition as<br/>merely a very good one. Very good indeed, in point of fact for the Pinot Noir,<br/>which dominates this blend, outweighing the Chardonnay by a factor of three to<br/>one. <br/> <br/>1999 was the first vintage vinified by Dominique Petit, formerly of Krug, and<br/>perhaps it is not entirely whimsical to detect a trace of the Krug power and<br/>concentration here. But above and beyond that of course is the supreme elegance<br/>and harmony for which Pol Roger is famous, the wine demonstrating an almost<br/>baletic elegance on the tongue to belie its ten years of cellaring. <br/> <br/>The mousse is generous and the fruit is both pure and powerful, backed up by a<br/>subtle minerality and gentle hints of ginger and spice. A long finish presages<br/>ageing potential until 2018. All in all a very worthy wine to celebrate the<br/>150th anniversary of this great House. <br/>(Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer)

Pol Roger made his first sale of wine in January 1849. Family circumstances forced him to set a business. As early as 1855. Pol began to favour a production od Brut Campagne.

Pale yellow-gold. Deep, pungent nose offers an array of orchard and citrus fruit qualities, along with notes of iodine, minerals and toasty lees. Chewy and impressively concentrated, with excellent clarity to its pear and orange flavors. The toasty quality gains strength with air and carries through an impressively long, spicy, floral finish. Very impressive, especially for a release from what is widely considered a so-so vintage for Champagne.
The 1986 Sir Winston Churchill is so very dry and austere that it was mistaken for Bollinger by a few tasters. Definitely a Champagne to have with food, this subtle, understated sparkler has a toasty nose, lots of power, depth, and good acidity. Typical of the Winston Churchill Cuveacute;e, this is a long ager, although it is quite good right now.
Subtle, with hints of ripe apple, almond paste, white peach and honey. There's a smoky mineral baseline, and though well-integrated the acidity is lightly chalky on the fine-grained palate. Drink now through 2019.
Flavorful yet dry, with lean citrus accents, lively acidity and a crisp, almost austere finish. Still has a great mouthfilling mousse after all these years on the yeast. Drink now.
A mature Champagne thatrsquo;s developed subtle taste nuances yet remained lively. Posh texture plus ripe fruit and spice flavors that linger. Drink now through 2004.
This is closed off, as many 1996 wines are at the moment. Itrsquo;s a great vintage of Winston Chruchill, a powerful young wine with mouthwatering flavors of cold-climate grapes and the chalky acidity that sustains them. Those flavors seem compressed and hidden for now, but the balance and minerality is clear. This has a long future ahead.
Dazzling balance and unique flavors make this memorable. Vivid, appetizing acidity melds with the fine mousse for a lively texture that carries the lemon, herb and mineral accents through a long finish. Drink now through 2003.
