Food Pairings for Il Carbonaione. Podere Poggio Scalette
Opened, decanted, and poured. A moderate amount of sediment in the bottle. Dense black cherry aromas (ripe but not sweet) on the nose, with grilled meats, toast (a little butter too?), and charred wood. The grilled meat character really came out with time in the glass. Smooth texture and medium weight on the palate, with black cherry skins, blackberry, violets and shale. Improved steadily over two hours drinkIng, and was going strong on the last sip. Great structure and balance, with the impression of being built for the long haul.
External Reviews for Il Carbonaione. Podere Poggio Scalette
Inky in color this new wave red boasts black currant blackberry violet and light spice flavors. Polished and thickly textured with a pleasantly bitter finish of sweet fruit. Sangiovese. Best from 2014 through 2022. BS Wine Spectator.
An extracted style, dark and jammy, showing blackberry, plum and oak spice flavors. This is fresh and impressive for its concentration, if a bit rigid on the finish now. Be patient. Sangiovese. Best from 2014 through 2024.
The 2008 Il Carbonaione shows gorgeous depth, precision and nuance, all of which are quite rare in 2008. Layers of smoke, tar, licorice and beautifully integrated French oak wrap around the deep fruit in its superb, articulated Il Carbonaione. Firm yet elegant tannins support the finish. I will not be surprised if the 2008 merits a higher score in a few yearsandrsquo; time. Il Carbonaione is 100% Sangiovese from an ancient clone native to this part of Chianti Classico called Lamole. The wine is aged in 350 liter French oak barrels, 50% of which are new. As it ages, Il Carbonaione often acquires notes of cedar, spices and sweet herbs that at times recall right-bank Bordeaux. Anticipated maturity: 2018andndash;2028.
Amazing dark color for a Sangiovese. Mind-blowing aromas of crushed blackberries, violets and blueberries, with sandalwood undertones. Full-bodied, with silky and focused tannins and beautiful, rich and subtle flavors. It lasts for minutes on the palate. Best ever from this estate, which is owned by legendary winemaker Vittorio Fiore. Sangiovese. Best from 2011 through 2017.
The 2007 II Carbonaione (Sangiovese) bursts from the glass with layers of dark blackberries, espresso, flowers and spices. Sumptuous and flamboyantly ripe, the Carbonaione boasts superb purity and a multi-dimensional, textured finish. Carbonaione has a tendency to acquire Bordeax-like qualities as it ages. This will be another fascinating wine to follow over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. Vittorio and Jurij Fiore make some of the most compelling wines in Tuscany from their pristine vineyards in the hills above Greve. Their 100% Sangiovese II Carbonaione is one of the great undiscovered treasures in the world of wine.
This gorgeous Sangiovese delivers notes of blueberry, raspberry and flowers on a full-bodied palate, with supervelvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Best after 2012.
The 2006 Il Carbonaione is a big, dark wine. Imposing at first, it flows from the glass with tons of super-ripe blueberries, grilled herbs, new leather, spices, minerals and flowers. Today the oak is rather prominent, but all the wine needs is time in bottle to come together. The finish is long, pure and refined. Simply put, the 2006 Il Carbonaione is a gem that readers wonrsquo;t want to miss. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2026.
