Poggio San Polo Rubio Sangiovese Toscana IGT 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A little reduced on the nose. Smells a bit Syrah-like, plenty of blackberry fruit here with some baked notes. In the mouth this is sweetly jammy with blackberry notes accented by a beefy quality and some lingering spice notes. Very smooth on entry and still very young with a taut feel to it. There’s a touch of vanilla here along with some blueberry on the back end, but the mid-palate feels a bit hollow at this stage. Not a bad bottle of wine, just not very Sangiovese-like. 84pts

The concept underpinning San Polo: to maximize the intrinsic potential of the terroir, make the quest for quality a priority and create an ethical and responsible context where man’s labours and the natural environment are integrated in a harmonious and constructive whole.   Our goal was to transform the San Polo Estate into a premium quality winery. The year 2007 marked the beginning of a new era for San Polo: a prestigious, historic appellation was accompanied by an entrepreneurial approach and openness to multiple business opportunities. Subsequently, the importance of an eco-friendly approach was understood and developed, leading to a steadfast commitment to sustainability, which is now the hallmark of the Estate and pervades and informs all its practices and operations.   San Polo is situated in Podernovi, on the southern slope of Montalcino. The valley is called Sant’ Antimo and there too, almost at touching distance, stands Mount Amiata. The locals call this area a ‘Mezzopane’, meaning that to admire the beautiful view is to ‘take one’s fill’, like food for the soul. The windows, knolls and vantage points of the Estate’s two farmhouses look out over the breath-taking Tuscan landscape of the Old Masters. And finally, San Polo’s modern and innovative wine-making cellar, so cutting-edge as to have become synonymous with the Company itself. Read less

Some caramel and toasted rice on the nose. Surprisingly mostly spice on the palate with a gentle cherry finish.

Beautiful ruby and violet hues...a bit of gym socks (aka reduction) and dirt on the nose with flecks of plump cherry and undertones of floral funkiness...a soft (yet still funky) palate with a mild finish.

Smoky and rich, slightly spicy with deep fruit flavors. There's a coffee-like taste in the finish which suggests some underripe fruit, but would be good with peppery food.

The 2009 Rubio bursts from the glass with layers of dark fruit that build with notable intensity. This plump, engaging wine is a huge overachiever in its price range. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015.
