Poggio Il Castellare Sangiovese Grosso 2006

Member Review by suzyleeogata:

We had this at a Tuscan Restaurant in Kumamoto, Japan. It paired with our steak and gnocchi perfectly. Dark cherry fruit wrapped up in coffee aromas and spicy tannins with a long finish.

Poggio Il Castellare has taken leaps and bounds in quality over the past few years and this vintage boasts a sophisticated and penetrating wine with cherry, spice, vanilla and toast. There’s a strong oak element here but it coexists comfortably with the natural fruit.

This is a very smooth and polished wine with good density, length and a squeaky-clean feel on the palate. This wine's texture is fine and smooth with buoyant aromas of wild berry, forest floor and root beer that keep the intensity alive.

A beauty, with terrific integration of its floral, cherry and plum tart notes, all backed by a steely structure. The elements are there and the tannins will be absorbed in time. Long, spicy finish. Best from 2013 through 2026.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino from Poggio Il Castellare is a dark, inward wine imbued with dark cherries, plums, tar, smoke, licorice and new leather, all of which come together on a powerful, incisive frame. This burly, somewhat rough around the edges Brunello shows plenty of length and richness, even if the tannins might benefit from a measure of added polish. Still, I see this working well with boldly flavored dishes. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
