Poggio Il Castellare Sangiovese Grosso 2004
96 points and 'Top 100 Wine of 2009 (#11)', Wine Spectator: Dried dark fruit on the nose, verging on date and prune. Full-bodied, with a dense palate of ripe fruit and supersilky tannins. This is a deep and beautiful red, delivering lots of subtle character. Fascinating. One of the undiscovered treasures of the vintage. Best after 2011. (4/30/09)
We had this at a Tuscan Restaurant in Kumamoto, Japan. It paired with our steak and gnocchi perfectly. Dark cherry fruit wrapped up in coffee aromas and spicy tannins with a long finish.

A solid red, with plum, berry and light cedar character. Full-bodied, with solid tannins and a long finish. All there. Best after 2007.
Ruby-red. Musky aromas of raspberry, espresso, baconfat and gunflint. Sweet, dense and pliant but with sound framing acidity. Nicely concentrated flavors of berries and baking spices. Has personality, but is it ripe enough? This started out a bit like syrah on the nose, but with extended aeration it was more cabernet-like, with flavors of black cherry liqueur and mint.
A bigger, more fruit-driven version of the 90 point-rated 2001. Deep garnet hue; highly aromatic with notes of anise, black currant and vanilla. Juicy plum and black fruit flavors dance delicately with toasty oak, spice and licorice.
Raisin and plum skin character with a medium to full body and a silky, fresh finish. Slightly disjointed now. Should come together with a bit of bottle age. Best after 2005.
Gorgeous aromas of crushed berry, raspberry and cigar box follow through to a full body, with soft tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very polished and pretty for the vintage. Drink now.
A beautiful steely red in color, this Brunello is both dense and elegant. The nose is complex, with hints of cedar wood, cream, and berry. Plummy, fleshy fruit is complemented by subtle tannins and hints of spice and herb on the palate, and the finish is precise, soft, and delicate. Powerful, structured, and a pleasure to enjoy.
Good full, deep red. Sexy nose offers ripe red cherry, raspberry, violet and a whiff of marzipan. Then juicy, sweet and enticing, offering precise flavors of red fruits and candied violet. Elegant and energetic wine, finishing long and satisfying, wi... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Sangiovese Grosso wine from Tuscany in Italy. 2004 Poggio Il Castellare Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 750ml
