External Reviews for Poggio Al Tesoro Red Bordeaux Blend Bolgheri Sondraia
The Poggio al Tesoro is an incredible Tuscan estate located in Bolgheri with vineyards right next to Sassicaia, a stone's throw from Ornellaia and down the road from Ca'Marcanda- Quite a neighborhood! What's even more remarkable is that they can produce a marvelous Super Tuscan wine like this 2007 Sondraia for such an incredibly affordable price. The Wine Advocate rated it 92 points and said "The 2007 Sondraia reveals tons of Bolgheri character in its warm, sunny fruit. Espresso, blackberries and French oak meld together in a radiant, expressive red that caresses the palate with layers of ample fruit. This is a gorgeous effort from Poggio al Tesoro and a very classic, representative red from Maremma. Sondraia is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2019."
Poggio al Tesoro is the result of a joint venture between the Allegrini family of Verona, northern Italy and American importer, Leonardo Lo Cascio. Situated in Bolgheri, on Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast, this 70 hectare property was acquired in 2001 by the Allegrini family. They brought in consultant winemaker Alberto Antonini to advise on viticulture and winemaking. 2003 was the first vintage. The Sondraia is a blend that is bright ruby red in colour with subtle aromas of exotic spices and notes of ripe red fruits. It is round and full-bodied with warm, juicy fruit. It has silky, ripe tannins and a long, persistent finish. Sondraia is the clear evidence of how a textbook Bordeaux blend can be masterfully crafted from Bolgheri’s terroir, capturing its character and identity. Enjoy this wine with an array of red meats, with hard and soft cheese and with rich tomato-based vegetable dishes.
