Poetry 2007

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Smooth, rich and fleshy, this is elegant and stylish, with savory herb, current and blackberry fruit that's intense, concentrated, focused and persistent. Needs time. Best from 2011 through 2018.

Established in 2002, Cliff Lede Vineyards encompasses sixty acres in the famed Stags Leap District. Owner Cliff Lede, viticulturalist David Abreu, Winemaker Michelle Edwards, and consultant Michel Rolland have come together to form an unrivalled team, making the most of this remarkable property. Completed in time for crush 2005, the new state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery boasts a berry-by-berry sorting system and conical tanks commissioned using a design inspired by the tanks of Château Latour. One tank per vineyard block ensures each lot evolves at its own pace and acres of caves with single-layer barrel storage ensure access to each barrel at all times. No corner has been cut. The winery produces Sauvignon Blanc, Claret and Cabernet Sauvignon. The flagship, Poetry Cabernet Sauvignon, is crafted from the steep hillside portion of the estate. The land, the talent, the tools and the passion: Cliff Lede Vineyards, a notable addition to the Stags Leap District. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Bright, deep ruby-red. Super-ripe aromas of currant, earth and smoky oak, lifted by a floral nuance. Round, seamless and broad without any heaviness; this really spreads out to coat the palate and fill the mouth. A suave wine with a nicely restrained sweetness to its blackberry-dominated flavors. The very smooth finish shows lovely aromatic persistence.

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry (925 cases of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec, and the rest Petit Verdot and Merlot) is the richest of these wines. Superbly deep ruby/purple-colored with notes of blackberry, cassis, licorice, subtle smoke, and incense, this opulent wine has a plush palate, silky tannins, impressive purity, stature, and length. However, the tannins are there and the wine still tastes primary despite its enormous potential. Give it 3ndash;4 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades.

Smells a bit reduced, but this is quite rich and expressive on the palate. Firm, intense and full-bodied, with layers of cedar, dried currant, mineral, tobacco and espresso, letting the flavors build on the finish, where the tannins are chewy. Drink now through 2020.

The quintessential expression of an elegant Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry (86% Cabernet Sauvignon) combines elegance with power. Layered and full-bodied with an ethereal lightness as well as touches of oak and tannin, it is gorgeously pure and textured yet strikingly long and intense. Bursting with flavor, but neither heavy nor cloying, give it 3andndash;4 years of cellaring, and enjoy it over the next 25+ years.
