Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Nei Cannubi 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Classic on the nose with a bit of sweet cassia bark, carob, wild cherry in alcohol, bit of wood spice, and lots of camphor on the deep nose. Pretty powerful on entry, this shows lovely clarity and depth on the palate, rich with sour fruits, ripe tannins but lots of them, and emerging inner mouth aromatic complexity. The palate shows shades of herbals notes, a hint of minerality, edgy tannins that are dusty in the mouth, and while this lacks the elegance of the Costa Grimaldi it makes up for it with depth of flavor and complexity. Classically austere Cannubi, you can taste the hot, white earthy on the the bitter cherry toned finish, a bit spicy and almost peppery. The Costa Grimaldi is a ball point pen, this is a felt marker. 92pts

Dark, earthy, fruity strawberry, wild and dark, a touch candied, a hint of chinato and Tootsie Roll. Soft, broad, dark, nice fruit, nice tannins, muscular, nice purity of fruit, good acid pop in the mouth, a bit compressed but with nice fruit. (88-90pts)

This opened with a huge angelica root nose, leathery and earthy with notes of tea and woodsy spice this is typical Einaudi which always makes me think of a very warm fermentation bubbling away elegance and definition. This shows quite a bit of decay in the mouth with a nice core of soy tinged fruit, nicely integrated acidity, a lean minerally finish which is short with a gentle tannic bite. At the table the Angelica root on the nose has become more pronounced with its green, floral, woodsy tones. the nose has turned decidedly dusty and vegetal. In the mouth this is cool, poised and integrated with good flavor and length but really suffers comparison tonight. It is a perfectly sound and fine bottle which deserves to be served, and judged, on its own.

Tasting through the wines of Poderi Einaudi in Dogliani with the convivial and charming Matteo Sardagna is a job I could look forward to year after year. As great grandson of the highly respected first president of Italy, Matteo wears many hats and has a strong grasp on managing every aspect of this venerable, historic winery. While best known for working magic with the Dolcetto grape in Dogliani, the Einaudi wine that most distinguished itself from all other Barolo's was the exceptional 2006 Barolo Cannubi. Cultivated on south, southeast facing Tortonian soils combining deep sand and calcareous clay, the celebrated Cannubi hill rises to an altitude exceeding 700 feet.. Einaudi 2006 Cannubi is deep ruby in color with a purple rim. Very intense aromas of balsam, rum, cinnamon, violet and rose are joined by savory tobacco and truffle, Structurally, this is a mammoth wine proudly showing terroir and careful extraction in the cellar (pumpover, submerged cap and delestage are all used). The wine was aged 18 months in French oak (30% new) and 18 months in large botti. A magical and magnificent Cannubi to seek out. Imported by Empson.

[15] Monolithic and international style. Pleasant nose of cherry, cedar, and wood. Mostly cherry on the mid palate with big tannins, menthol on the finish. Obviously too young, but dont see a great upside. Not a bad wine, but would not buy again

Winner of the prestigious Tre Bicchieri Award from Gambero Rosso! Cannubi is the greatest, most historical Barolo cru, going back to the 1700s. The Einaudi family owns the south and southeastern slopes of the celebrated Cannubi hill, at an altitude of 722 feet above sea level, providing a Barolo of superb breed, longevity, elegance, aromas and magnitude. The wine’s superb concentration is enhanced and fine-tuned by aging of at least 30 months in French oak. The result is grandeur and complexity, luscious aromas, layers and layers of velvet, spice, goudron, truffles; long, long finish and a long, long cellar life of 25 to 30 years. From the stellar 2010 vintage, this wine has 90+ scores all around including 97 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine who made it a Cellar Selection and said "Enticing scents of rose petals, violet, tilled earth and leather mingle on this wine hailing from the historical heart of the celebrated Cannubi vineyard. The vibrant palate offers crushed dark cherry accented with cinnamon, clove and a touch of vanilla alongside silky tannins. Balanced and loaded with finesse, it will develop more complexity over the next few decades. Drink 2020–2040." Limited!

Aromas of crushed strawberries and flowers follow through to a full body with fine tannins and a long long finish. Very classy for the vintage. Better in 2015. James Suckling.

Bright, dark red-ruby. Distinctly feminine, pinot-like aromas of raspberry, flowers and truffley underbrush. Less outsized than the Costa Grimaldi but compellingly silky on the palate; sweet, shapely and sharply delineated but youthfully closed tod... Stephen Tanzers IWC. The 2007 Barolo Nei Cannubi is a dark hulking wine of uncharacteristic power and richness. Waves of dark fruit completely cover the palate in a bold style that sits on the razor s edge of overripeness. The due south facing Cannubi vineyard seems to have been somewhat penalized in 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. -Antonio Galloni Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
