This smelled of old bones, shoe polish, and balsamic tones but overall was very ungiving and remarkably shallow. On the palate there is a lot of sweetness here from both fruit and wood lending this an easy style. This is neither complex not particularly well structured, but it is fruity. 84pts

There’s a touch of nuttiness on the nose here but with so much rich fruit, spice and floral tones that it’s not disturbing at all. This gains a huge menthol top note as well but it’s well integrated into the intense aromatics that remain really fruit driven with deep wild cherry tones. The fruit really follows through on the palate with a sweet core of fresh, intense fruit framed by nicely nuanced spice tones. The midpalate shows excellent depth though the finish is a bit compressed and lean with a slight tarry edge. This might actually still need some time and with such richness and reserves of fruit I would keep them in the cellar if I had any but it still is pretty fine today. 93pts

The nose was dark and seductive with cherry tobacco, plum, dusty potpourri a hint of musk and medicinal herbs. On the palate, it was velvety and perfectly balanced with masses of fruit. Sour cherry sauce and a hint of cedar filled the senses and warded off the silky tannins that were still present but not out front. On the finish, the fruit turned dry yet still intense with hints of sweet spices.

Very limited notes due mainly to a lack luster performance. This wine came across and a dark bruiser without any grace. The nose showed red fruit and wet leaves. The palate was chunky, showing red fruit, sage and a bit of tar. Poor performance from a bottle that I was really looking forward to.

The 2007 Barolo Colonnello is one of the darkest, richest wines I have ever tasted from Aldo Conterno. The explosive, textured Colonnello bursts from the glass with tons of dark fruit, violets, licorice and oak. A long, vibrant finish and the sheer d... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Winemaker's Notes:

"The nose is amazing with roses and minerals, and dark fruits. Also hints of bark and mushrooms. Full-bodied, with super fine tannins and a long tangy finish with polished tannins. Persistent and beautiful. Better in four or five years, but gorgeous now...96" JamesSuckling.com 07/12 "This is round and supple, with a fleshy profile enveloping pure cherry, raspberry and spice flavors. Ripe and harmonious, with no shortage of structure. A mineral element emerges on the tight finish. Best from 2016 through 2035...96" WS 12/12 "The 2008 Barolo Colonnello is impressive. It shows gorgeous richness and depth in its focused, energetic fruit. Sweet red berries, flowers and spices are woven together beautifully in the 2008 Colonnello. The elegant side of Barolo comes through, but with an extra degree of muscle. The oak, sometimes noticeable in this bottling, is very well-integrated. Floral notes are woven throughout the finish. The Colonnello often gives the impression of being early to mature relative to the estate’s other Baroli, but the 2008 is surprisingly powerful and structured. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033...95" WA 4/2012
