Plungerhead Old Vine Zinfandel Lodi 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Assertively oaky on the nose though this still allows the candied red fruit and sweet herbal aromas of the wine to emerge through the smoke and toasted oak notes. Bright and juicy on entry, this is easy to drink and it unfolds nicely on the palate with brisk red cherry and raspberry fruit nicely supported by oak that is surprisingly well integrated. There are some gentle tannins lending support and acids that are bright, if integrated, bringing a hint of orange rind to the appellate. There’s a little toasty pie crust thing going on here and that turns into a full blown vanilla note on the backend as this transitions to a clean if modest finish. Easy going with nice balance and solid fruit. 85pts

Plungerhead:
Plungerhead is a brand of Zinfandel produced by The Other Guys, the hipster offshoot of Sebastiani family wine brands. The bottle features a ZORK closure (a red tear-tab stopper) that matches the Monty Python-esque  label image of the bespoke, mustachioed gent with the red plunger on his head. These affordable Zinfandels have gained popularity not only for their unique packaging, but also their value-driven quality.

A lttle sweet but pretty darn good for the price. Will buy again even if I hate the stopper.

A little rough on the first evening but by the second day it developed into a very nice zin. High QPR.

Classic Zin fruit on the nose. In the mouth medium weight with red and black fruits that merge with spicy notes with enough acidity to satisfy. The finish is soft tannins and is medium in length. Overall a nice wine with good QPR. Hate the Zork!!!

Initial essences of plum/red fruit give way to a slight smoky ending - great value - should be able to procure this wine for under $15

TASTING NOTES: A plush deep purple hue in color, this Lodi Zinfandel comes with enticing aromas of dried cherry, sweet blackberry, Tahitian vanilla, brown sugar, toasted walnut and violets. Complex layered flavors start with bright Bing cherry, black currants, blackberry cobbler, molasses and Mexican hot chocolate. On the finish rich notes of nutmeg, dried sweetened blueberry and sandalwood linger on the palate. FOOD PAIRINGS: A well balanced, food friendly Zinfandel that can be enjoyed with almost every cuisine. A stunning recommendation would be lamb gyros and Greek sides, or a teriyaki glazed burger with grilled pineapple and a side of sweet potato fries, or even mom’s old school meatloaf with a side of roasted potatoes and glazed carrots.

On the finish rich notes of nutmeg, dried sweetened blueberry and sandalwood linger on the palate. WINEMAKER NOTES: An ideal growing season for Zinfandel in Lodi, 2013 provided a long warm season with just the right amount of sunlight and heat to allow the grapes to ripen unlike anything the industry has seen in decades. The payoff was rich and concentrated blackberry fruit with hints of spice and layers of depth in the mid-palate. To intensify the color and provide subtle blueberry notes, a small amount of Petite Sirah was added from both Lodi and Clarksburg. A splash of Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel and Primitivo from Sonoma provided further complexity. To round out the blend, a touch of Napa Valley Petit Verdot was added to provide supplementary depth and structure. A stunning recommendation would be lamb gyros and Greek sides, or a teriyaki glazed burger with grilled pineapple and a side of sweet potato fries, or even mom’s old school meatloaf with a side of roasted potatoes and glazed carrots.

The 2012 Lodi Zinfandel is dark garnet in color with some wonderful old vine character aromas. There are notes of blackberry fruit, spice cake, fresh tobacco, white pepper, and fresh strawberry. In the mouth, you experience flavors of dried cranberry, blackberry, blackstrap molasses, brambly Zin fruit, toasted walnut, and hints of mocha laced cappuccino. This blend finishes with notes of dark chocolate, dried cherry, vanilla from American Oak, and deep toasted hazelnut from French Oak. - WineryVarietals:85% Zinfandel6% Barbera5% Carignane2% Petite Sirah2% TempranilloAppellation:86% Lodi10% Sierra FoothillspH: 3.67TA: 5.5 g/LAlcohol: 14.5%Residual Sugar: 5 g/L
