Plowbuster Pinot Noir 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Pure garnet in color with vibrant berry and brown spice on the nose. Dark cherry and cinnamon on the entry with a bright mid-palate that has classic pinot fine tannins and silky texture. Finishes nicely with a lilt of strawberry making it a wonderful match with game hens basted in quince sauce.

The vines are planted to a southeast slope with an altitude of 500 to 600 feet. Gravelly volcanic soils--Nekia, Saum and Jory--have proven perfect for dry-farming our low-yielding vines. We aim for complexity by using blending components from the many distinctly different blocks within the site. There are seven different pinot noir clones, two blocks of Dijon 76 chardonnay and two different pinot gris clones. All wines from the Carabella label are made by winemaker Mike Hallock. Other fine wineries in the North Willamette Valley purchase Carabella fruit as well. Read less

Pale and more garnet that one would expect from such a youthful wine. The nose is certainly not fruit driven but it is subtly complex with a touch of cinnamon tic-tac immediately apon pouring that is slowly joined by some quinine, marshmallow, and graham cracker. The notes sound like this is sweet and confected by somehow it’s not. It’s a touch stemmy and that helps offset the sweeter tones but event he fruit, dark and reminiscent of blackberries, doesn’t come off as sweet. On the palate this has some depth to it and is fairly seamless. It’s a very interesting wine, seemingly combining the best traits of a more fruit forward style without ever loosing its sense of restraint. The flavors are a touch mint and earthy with rich wild berry notes that float across the palate. There’s a little meatiness on the backend and the finish is gentle and moderately with a hint of vanilla to the red cherry fruit. This is an elegant style of Pinot, not fruit driven nor the most complex, but it is exceptionally well balanced and complete and an excellent value. 90pts

The name is appropriate, 'cause I feel like I busted a plow all over the place. I'm picking up little pieces of tart fruits, creaminess, vanilla, and oak. At least the vanilla is subtle, respect.

Floral, yet herbaceous aromas. The wine is in good balance, acidity, alcohol and oak. Simple but nice.

Manischewitz nose - very sweet. Grainy bright cherries. Nicely done pinot.

Plowbuster by Carabella bears the unique mark of Oregon Pinot Noir. Incredibly expressive character and elegance common to wines at double its price. Plowbuster is a burgundian that speaks in straight-forward American complexity and flavor.

Absence of fruit, no finish, nice bouquet but a flat ending, an ordinary Pinot
