My special favorite, with a rich bouquet of ripe red fruits and black olives with lovely accents of sweet spices and vanilla. I found it to be round, fruity and flavorful. A full-bodied wine with well integrated tannins and a vibrant spicy finish.
Grand dark Ruby red, very concentrated and intense in the glass. Booming nose, straight out of the box with deep black cherries, hints of oak and vanilla. Very intense. The palate brings home a brilliant wine, perfectly balanced, jammy and fruity on the finish. It's a little bit drying and tannic but actually I enjoyed that aspect to it. Felt quality all the way to the 30 second finish. QPR kudos!
Nice fruit, smooth finish.

Maroccoli Syrah 2010 - 91 points, Wine Enthusiast/ A savory and meaty expression of Syrah, this opens with enticing aromas of dark cherry, leather, cured meat and wet earth. The palate is extra smooth and soft, with flavors like pistachio and almond, that pin the wine to Sicily.
Syrah 2008 - 88 Points, Vinous/ Full ruby-red. Dark plum, minty herbs, violet and smoked beef on the nose. Leaner and less ripe than the 2009 but with very good energy and cut to its spicy flavors of blackberry and candied violet. The smooth finish features an herbal element and repeating notes of flowers and smoked beef. Still quite young: a few more years of bottle age should bring added depth and volume.
Syrah 2007 - 91 points, Wine Enthusiast/ One of Sicily’s best expressions of Syrah, Planet’s rich and velvety wine offers elegant aromas of blackberry, cherry, smoked ham and crushed white pepper. The wine is smooth and long on the finish with loads of chocolate intensity.
Planeta is a Journey through Sicily. And that journey begins at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate which the Planeta family has owned since the 1600s. Here on Italy’s most enchanting island, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Years of careful research paid off when the Planeta wines were met with immediate critical acclaim upon introduction in the U.S. in the late 1990s. Menfi, in the southeastern portion of Sicily, is the heart of Planeta and its operational base. Various types of soil are found here, but all are rich in lime and clay, ideal for the international red grape varieties which are transformed into wine at La Dispensa winery – Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Production Area Menfi, Sicily, Italy Grape Varieties 100% Syrah Vinification The grapes are de-stemmed and crushed; extraction on skins followed by 12 days of maceration at 77°F with fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks. After racking, the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Color Ruby red with violet undertones Bouquet Full and rounded bouquet; intense spiciness with hints of pepper, cloves and rosemary; overtones of cassis, coffee, fig and red fruit jam Taste Fresh fruit dominates; luscious and supple in texture, with a mouth-filling character Alcohol 14.5% Serving Suggestions Pair with mature cheeses, beef dishes, lamb with ginger sauce, cheeseburger with mushrooms, or herb-encrusted ribs.
Founded in 1959, MandraRossa is the creation of Cantine Settesoli, one of the world’s largest wine producers. Boasting a premium range of estate-bottled wines, MandraRossa is part of Sicily’s largest wine producer and co-operative formed by 2,000 members. Located in the historic town of Menfi, in the southwest corner of this idyllic Mediterranean island, MandraRossa was guided into modern times by the “father” of contemporary Sicilian wine, Diego Planeta. Diego led the company for 38 years from 1973 to 2011. MandraRossa’s extensive investment in advanced winemaking technology combined with the expertise of a distinguished team of five full-time winemakers has resulted in an outstanding line of wines that capture the flavors, essence, and mystique of Sicily. Production Area The MandraRossa estate vineyards near the town of Menfi in southwestern Sicily. Sourced from vineyards first planted in 1989 at an altitude between 650 – 820 feet above sea level. Grape Varieties 100% Syrah Vinification The grapes are manually harvested in early September. A brief maceration then takes place for one day followed by one week of fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature between 72° - 77°F with yeasts selected by the winemakers for varietal and regional expression. A system of rack and return and traditional pumping over provides gentle extraction of deep color and fine tannins while retaining fruit characters. Post fermentation maceration is determined by the winemakers in order to accentuate the development of soft tannins and a greater degree of complexity in the wine. Color Bright ruby red Bouquet A pronounced nose of ripe blackberry and cloves Taste A juicy and velvety wine with jammy notes of black fruits and dark plum with a long, rounded finish of toast and vanilla Alcohol 13.5% Serving Suggestions Perfect with pizza, rare grilled tuna steak or hearty pastas in red sauce.
Maroccoli Syrah 2008 - 92 points, JamesSuckling.com/ A wine with spice, dried meat and fruit. Full and juicy with pretty fruit and fine tannins. Delicious now. This is the first year of this Syrah being single vineyard from 400 meters high.
Syrah 2007 - 90 Points, eRobertParker.com/ The 2007 Syrah is the most complete of this year's reds. Succulent dark plums, sweet herbs, flowers and minerals caress the palate through to the round, generous finish. There is a plumpness to the Syrah I find immensely appealing... from Planeta, one of Sicily's better-known estates.
