Food Pairings for Planeta Syrah Sicilia IGT
My special favorite, with a rich bouquet of ripe red fruits and black olives with lovely accents of sweet spices and vanilla. I found it to be round, fruity and flavorful. A full-bodied wine with well integrated tannins and a vibrant spicy finish.
Grand dark Ruby red, very concentrated and intense in the glass. Booming nose, straight out of the box with deep black cherries, hints of oak and vanilla. Very intense. The palate brings home a brilliant wine, perfectly balanced, jammy and fruity on the finish. It's a little bit drying and tannic but actually I enjoyed that aspect to it. Felt quality all the way to the 30 second finish. QPR kudos!

External Reviews for Planeta Syrah Sicilia IGT
Maroccoli Syrah 2008 - 92 points, JamesSuckling.com/ A wine with spice, dried meat and fruit. Full and juicy with pretty fruit and fine tannins. Delicious now. This is the first year of this Syrah being single vineyard from 400 meters high.
Planeta is a Journey through Sicily. And that journey begins at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate which the Planeta family has owned since the 1600s. Here on Italy’s most enchanting island, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Years of careful research paid off when the Planeta wines were met with immediate critical acclaim upon introduction in the U.S. in the late 1990s. Menfi, in the southeastern portion of Sicily, is the heart of Planeta and its operational base. Various types of soil are found here, but all are rich in lime and clay, ideal for the international red grape varieties which are transformed into wine at La Dispensa winery – Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Production Area Menfi, Sicily, Italy Grape Varieties 100% Syrah Vinification The grapes are de-stemmed and crushed; extraction on skins followed by 12 days of maceration at 77°F with fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks. After racking, the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Color Ruby red with violet undertones Bouquet Full and rounded bouquet; intense spiciness with hints of pepper, cloves and rosemary; overtones of cassis, coffee, fig and red fruit jam Taste Fresh fruit dominates; luscious and supple in texture, with a mouth-filling character Alcohol 14.5% Serving Suggestions Pair with mature cheeses, beef dishes, lamb with ginger sauce, cheeseburger with mushrooms, or herb-encrusted ribs.
Syrah 2009 - 86 point, Wine Enthusiast/ Used espresso grounds and soft nutmeg aromas mingle with sweet red berry and plum fruit notes. The mouth is full and creamy with dusty tannins and a juicy red fruit core. Straightforward but enjoyable and easy to drink.
Syrah 2006 - Wine Advocate/ ... Laced with vanilla notes, it also shows good Syrah typicity, hints of game and has a certain sexy quality. Bright and light, without a lot of mid-palate concentration but with some intensity of flavor on the finish and a hit of tannin at the moment.
Syrah 2006 - The Jewish Week/ ...a distinctly Mediterranean style...Aged for a year in a mixture of American and French oak, this dark-garnet colored, medium-to-full bodied Syrah has flavors and aromas of red cherries, plums, white pepper and oak, with hints of boysenberries, cinnamon and vanilla, and an intriguing note of fennel. It is fully ready to drink, and should continue to drink well for another two years.
Maroccoli Syrah 2010 - 91 points, Wine Enthusiast/ A savory and meaty expression of Syrah, this opens with enticing aromas of dark cherry, leather, cured meat and wet earth. The palate is extra smooth and soft, with flavors like pistachio and almond, that pin the wine to Sicily.
