Planeta Red Blend Sicilia IGT Burdese 2008

External Review by Palm Bay International:

Sips/ Who's Drinking What? "A wine that I’m very enthusiastic about at the moment is the 2004 Planeta Burdese, from Sicily. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc blend with an intense and richly extracted minerality that’s nicely balanced with hints of bell pepper and anise. A bold pairing with this deeply hued red wine would be out Sicilian-inspired grilled tune with eggplant caponata and pignoli sauce." - Anthony Mazzola, managing partner, Accademia di Vino, New York City

Burdese 2008 - 90 points, Wine Advocate/ Dark red cherries, plums, tobacco, espresso and licorice take shape in the glass. The tannins are a bit firm, but there is more than enough fruit to stand up to the wine’s textural elements. Sweet, perfumed notes laced with Cabernet Franc character develop on the finish, adding lift, perfume and finesse.

Burdese 2008 - 91 points, Wine Enthusiast/ Burdese is Sicily’s tip-of-the-hat to the great wines of Bordeaux. A blended red, the wine is elegant and firm, with dark concentration and earthy tones of leather and spice behind fresh berry and blackberry. Balance and length characterize the mouthfeel.

/ ...it offers convincing ripeness but also very good structure from fresh acidity and fine-grained tannin. Notes of blackberries, dark cherries and plums are accented with hints of dried herbs and woodsmoke.

/ Planeta, based in Menfi, has been among the leaders in planting international varieties in Sicily. The wines are made in a fruit-driven plump style. The 2005 Burdese is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc aged 14 months in French oak. Notes of dark fruit, mint, sweet herbs and chocolate emerge from this powerful wine.

Burdese 2008 - 91 points, JamesSuckling.com/ A balanced red with currants and cedar and lightly toasted wood. Full body, with velvety tannins and bright finish. Slightly hollow mid-palate but should fill in. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc.
