Planeta is a Journey through Sicily. And that journey begins at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate which the Planeta family has owned since the 1600s. Here on Italy’s most enchanting island, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Years of careful research paid off when the Planeta wines were met with immediate critical acclaim upon introduction in the U.S. in the late 1990s. The trio’s newest winery is La Segreta in Menfi, upon which the Planeta winemaking expertise has been lavished to achieve wines of the very best quality. The grapes from this wine come from the Planeta winery’s first vineyard. The label pays tribute to this meaningful place with a map of the vineyard. Production Area Menfo, Sicily, Italy Grapes are sourced from the vineyards of Menfi and Sambuca di Sicilia and Noto. Grape Varieties 50% Nero d'Avola, 25% Merlot, 20% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Franc Vinification The grapes are de-stemmed and crushed, then macerate on the skins for 10–14 days. After racking, the wine is kept in stainless steel vessels until bottling. Color Ruby red with hints of purple Bouquet An explosion of fresh fruit on the nose (red currant, mulberry, raspberry, cherry and prune) balanced by a zesty spiciness Taste Vibrant fruit flavors from the Nero d’Avola are nicely balanced by ripe, soft tannins and a refreshing acidity Alcohol 13% Serving Suggestions Delicious partner for risotto with beans and meat, barbecued meats, lamb, and flavorful cheeses.
La Segreta Rosso 2007 - The Washington Post/ ...the star of Planeta's line is La Segreta, a $15 gem that blends 50 percent Nero d'Avola with 25 percent merlot, 20 percent syrah and 5 percent cabernet franc. Again a sea breeze comes to mind, this time carrying perhaps the smoke from a bonfire on the beach: a jumble of wood flavors tossed on the flames, plus plums and cherries, and did I mention the smoke? It's a slurry of aromas and flavors that would make no sense as a recipe ingredient list, but they come to mind in a rush as I explore this wine in the glass. The wine is a delightfully elegant charmer that seduces right from the start.
La Segreta Rosso 2009 - 87 points, Wine Spectator/ Aromas of pink peppercorn lead to a juicy palate of cherry and plum notes, as a stony minerality accents the vibrant finish.
Italian Connection - Planeta/ Planeta is an impressive, critically acclaimed group of wines- at a variety of price points. You don’t have to think about it- if you see “Planeta” on the label, you know it’s going to be good.Appealing for its bright raspberry and red cherry aromas and flavors, with delicate cocoa powder and herbal notes that linger on the fresh finish. Food friendly red at a good price. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. A blend of Nero d’Avola, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc.
La Segreta Rosso 2007 - 85 Points, The Wine Advocate/ The 2007 La Segreta Rosso is 50% Nero d'Avola, 25% Merlot, 20% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Franc. Medium in body, this fresh, vinous red reveals nice plumpness and length in a generous, soft style.
