External Reviews for Planeta Fiano Sicilia IGT Cometa
Cometa 2010 - 90 points, Wine Advocate/ …wraps around the palate with juicy peaches, apricots, flowers and spices … Expressive tropical notes add volume and an attractive lushness on the expressive finish.
Cometa 2011 - 92 points, Wine Enthusiast/ Among the greatest expressions of Fiano, Cometa is a full and generous effort, with deep layers of passion fruit and stone fruit, plus touches of vanilla, honey and light spice. The concentration and freshness is wonderful, and the wine would pair well with steamed lobsters or buttery crab legs.
Planeta is a Journey through Sicily. And that journey begins at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate which the Planeta family has owned since the 1600s. Here on Italy’s most enchanting island, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Years of careful research paid off when the Planeta wines were met with immediate critical acclaim upon introduction in the U.S. in the late 1990s. Planeta’s first winery, Ulmo, together with an old family farmhouse, is situated on the banks of the Arancio Lake in the eastern portion of Sicily. The soil here is deep and chalky – perfect for the production of Planeta’s great white wines: Chardonnay and Cometa. Production Area Menfi, Sicily, Italy Harvested from two separate vineyards; Gurra, planted in 1998 and Dispensa planted in 1996. both have roughly 4500 vines / hectare. Grape Varieties 100% Fiano Vinification The grapes are de-stemmed and crushed; the juice is clarified through cold settling overnight and then inoculated with selected yeast. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks over a 20 day period at a cold temperature of 15°C (59°F). Bottled in the second half of February following the year of harvest. Color Straw yellow with evident green tints Bouquet Intense, luscious; within the wide range of aromas one can distinguish lychees, nectarines, pineapple, mandarin, peppermint, and Mediterranean bush scents such as chamomile and wild thyme Taste Elegant and full, with fruit flavors accented by intriguing fragrances of the seashore Alcohol 14% Serving Suggestions An outstanding match with seafood tartare, asparagus soup, ravioli with ricotta cheese and duck breast with wild mushrooms.
Sizzling Sicily/ Intense aromas of Meyer lemon, Bosc pear, pineapple and vanilla. Medium-full with excellent concentration. Rich finish with good fruit persistence, balanced acidity and spicy oak. Enjoy with richly flavored seafood over the next two to three years.
/ Bright golden yellow. Initially closed nose quickly opens to show varietally accurate scents of green apple, ripe apricot and baked pear, with hints of yellow plum and vanilla. Quite fat on entry, then mineral-driven on the palate, with terrific depth and weight to the ripe orchard fruit flavors. Persistent, nuanced finish features dried peach, Golden Delicious apple and vanilla. Quick thick in texture but has the balance to partly hide it's 14.5% alcohol. This may yet merit a higher score if it develops greater complexity with another year of bottle aging.
Cometa 2006 - 91 Points, Wine Enthusiast/ Cometa boasts a brilliant, saturated golden color and carries through with clean execution in terms of aromas and flavors. Notes of tropical fruit and ripe citrus come into sharp focus thanks to Fiano's natural minerality. In the mouth, it offers plenty of weight, but balances that with great length of the finish, hinting at anise, honey, limes and oranges.
Cometa 2010 - 92 points, Wine Enthusiast/ Cometa is an irresistible white wine from the deep south of Italy. It speaks its own Sicilian language but with modern, international accents. Made from Fiano grapes, it opens with a beautiful golden color, and delivers rich aromas of stone fruit, vanilla cream and rose. The mouthfeel is exceedingly soft, creamy and long-lasting.
