The 2009 vintage had a straw-gold color. On the nose a heavy aroma of apricot, a bit of banana, golden apple, blossom honey and hints of toasted hazelnut. Alcohol by volume was label listed at 13.5%. Rich and round on the palate with some acidity. Lots of notes of rather exotic, ripe fruit. Not overwhelmingly complex. Very long aftertaste. Planeta is a Journey through Sicily. And that journey begins at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate which the Planeta family has owned since the 1600s. Here on Italy’s most enchanting island, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Years of careful research paid off when the Planeta wines were met with immediate critical acclaim upon introduction in the U.S. in the late 1990s. Planeta’s first winery, Ulmo, together with an old family farmhouse, is situated on the banks of the Arancio Lake in the eastern portion of Sicily. The soil here is deep and chalky – perfect for the production of Planeta’s great white wines: Chardonnay and Cometa. Production Area Menfi, Sicili, Italy Grape Varieties 100% Chardonnay Vinification The grapes are de-stemmed and crushed; the juice is clarified through cold settling overnight and then inoculated wit selected yeast. Fermented and aged in 225-liter French oak barrels, 50% new and 50% one-year-old. The wine is aged for 10 months in barrel before bottling and release. Color Golden yellow with lively green glints. Bouquet Rich and intense. Aromas of peach, golden apple, white figs, vanilla cream, and meringue mingle with overtones of hazelnut and honey. The wood is shy but well balanced. Taste Soft, round and concentrated on the palate; the fruit flavors are wonderfully balanced by a powerful streak of acidity and rich mineral character. Alcohol 14% Serving Suggestions An outstanding match for ravioli with fish and lemon sauce, handmade pasta with truffles, and grilled meats. After some years of bottle aging, enjoyable with mature cheeses.

The Planeta Chardonnay has become the image illustrating the changes taking place in Sicilian wines. It was born from a dream of competing with the world in the production of this noble and widespread grape variety. A long progress begun in 1985 which has been full of surprise and success. Today Planeta’s Chardonnay is an icon for the whole of Sicily. The vines of Ulmo and Maroccoli which create it are unique in their location and terroir.Its fermentation and maturing in French barrels, which by now has been carefully planned for years, delivers an extraordinarily graceful, powerful wine. This wine is golden yellow with lively green glints. Rich and intense, this has aromas of peach, golden apple, white figs, vanilla cream, meringue. Hints of hazelnut and Zagara Honey complement shy by well balanced wood. Soft, round, energetic, full, its balance is characterized by a fine acidity, the fresh flavour and substantial extract. Perfect with air-dried ham, such as prosciutto but also ideal with all kind of risotto and white meat. After a few years of maturation this could also be served with herby cheese.
