I am going to join the multitudes of wine journalists who have extolled the virtues of this wine and tip my hat to the extraordinary Planeta Chardonnay. The style is completely unique. A honeyed-golden color not found in most young whites (usually an indication of maturity, it may confuse some wine drinkers - this is not old wine, it is great wine!). Intentionally made with some oxidation, the striking dark color extends to the explosive taste and feel on the palate. A show stopper, this white struts like a well-aged grand cru Burgundy - standing 17 hands high with tremendous power and charm (excuse the horse analogy, but this wine transports me away from mere taste descriptors) OK, I'll try - super rich tropical fruit, along with roasted hazelnuts, mouthwatering ripe pears and something... profound.
This full-throttle Chardonnay shows all-out barrel fermentation and bâtonnage character. Big and round, with lots going on in the glass. Finishes with opulent honey, caramel and butterscotch character. Drink now.
