The soaring peaks of the Simonsberg Mountain have long served as a guardian to the birth, renaissance and continuing triumph of Plasir de Merle. For it is on the rolling foothills of this majestic mountain that vineyards thrive, producing grapes of exceptional quality and richness that would have found favour with its Hugenot founder Charles Marias. He was granted the land in 1693 having fled religious persecution in France. A deeply spiritual man, this land was his rebirth, a magnificent redemption where his spirit took hold, and continues to flower to this day. Under his inspired grandson Jacob Marais, the estate grew to be the finest in the region. He built the manor house in 1764; with its elegant gable it remains of the earliest and finest examples of Cape Dutch architecture. Through various consolidations the modern Plasir de Merle took shape, eventually passing by marriage to the Hojo family in the 19th century, and after several short tenures came under the ownership of Stellenbosch Farmers Winery in 1964. Wine Tasting NotesThe Plaisir de Merle Cabernet Sauvignon has a dark ruby color with a deep blackish/purple tint and sweetish plummy aromas. It has a rich mouthfeel, with a dry finish and flavors of ripe plummy fruit, dark chocolate and blackberries, backed by firm tannins to ensure beneficial ageing. A small amount of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Merlot were blended with the Cabernet Sauvignon to provide more complexity and increase the accessibility of the wine.



This Cabernet is elegant, soft and medium-bodied for early enjoyment. Great with Beef Stews and Pepper Steak.
