The 2007 Barolo is inviting, sweet and open, yet has plenty of underlying tannins to provide support. Sweet hints of tobacco, spices, leather and herbs add complexity on the textured yet grippy finish.
"Intense and ripe berry fruit along with mild and almost sweet tannins give this wine structure
Year after year, Pio Cesare Barolos are ranked among the world's best. The Pio Cesare family takes a modern approach to quality winemaking. Their unique method stresses minimal intervention to produce wines of particularly supple flavor expression. The Nebbiolo grapes used to produce Pio’s Barolo come from the family vineyards around the village of Serralunga d’Alba. These grapes account for about 70% of production, with additional grapes sourced from the most favorable areas in Castiglione Falletto and Monforte, the same stock they have used for the last hundred years. The grapes from Serralunga give a full body, those from Castiglione Falletto offer an ethereal and tempting nose, and the fruits from Monforte provide class and a refined nature. Aged in 30% new French oak for 2 years the wine is then put in 50% new Slavonian oak for another 3 years. In the Wine Advocate, Antonio Galioni says "Pio Cesare’s straight Barolo doesn’t seem to get the attention or spotlight it deserves, but it has truly been one of Piedmont’s under the radar jewels for some time." And Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this wine 95 points saying "Pio Cesare and the 2007 vintage marry beautifully to produce a layered, opulent, textured, rich wine that is bursting with zesty red fruit, sassy spice, leather and toasted espresso bean. What really sets this wine apart is the dense smoothness of its texture. Save this bottle in your cellar 10 years or more."
This is a classic Barolo, with excellent structure and harmony, mild tannins and balanced fruit. It is immediately approachable, but it has a very long ageing potential.
